We just returned from a long-awaited family trip to Italy. We spent a total of 4 nights at the Hotel Santa Maria in Trastavere, Rome. I am so grateful to Trip Advisor for helping me to locate this gem of a hotel. The location is just great for walking to both the sites of the Vatican to the north and to Ancient Rome to the east (probably 15- 20 minutes to each)as well as other points in between (the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, etc.) It is a haul from northern Rome (Spanish Steps & the train station) so we did take a taxi or two but mostly walked. We loved Trastavere with its narrow cobblestone streets and wide selection of shops and restaurants - a very lively area. The Piazza Santa Maria is very close to the hotel with its fantastic church and tolling bell (yes, it does ring all night long but never kept us awake after full days of sightseeing). The hotel staff was very helpful, arranging everything from our ride to and from the airport to holding our luggage while we traveled south for two days to suggesting restaurants & clubs in the area(& even making reservations for us). They have a selection of umbrellas you can borrow which came in handy as we had a rainy week. The hotel breakfasts were absolutely delicious: salami, a selection of cheeses, scrambled eggs, at least two cakes, a selection of pastries, yogurts, fresh fruits, juices, and at least 5 different coffee options plus tea. They also provide an amazing assortment of appetizers at about 5:30 in the afternoon, if you want to relax and have a drink from their bar. They have a computer where you can check your e-mail if you are so inclined (after the breakfast hour is over). As there were four of us (parents plus two 'kids' 21 and 17), we had the "suite junior mansard" with two twin beds downstairs and a double upstairs. There were two TV's and a nice bathroom. It might not be a great choice for you if you were tall as the upstairs bedroom and bathroom ceilings are slanted. Our 6 ft son could not stand up in all areas but it was certainly not a major problem. There is a central courtyard with orange trees and tables for eating that is very beautiful and makes you feel that you are truly in an oasis away from the bustle of the city. One note: we communicated directly with the hotel by e-mail and the replies often took a few days so don't be surprised at that. We would return to the Hotel Santa Maria in a heartbeat!
