The location is accross the river from most Rome attractions but we found the location to be a great Get-A-Way after active days of tourism. The restaurants in the area are fabulous and the Reception Staff can provide great recomendations. They actually knew of an Organic Gelato store a few minutes from the hotel. (We rated it the best we found in Italy) We walked to the Forum on our first day and it took around one hour so all other days we used Taxi's which were reasonable (but make sure they use the meters).
The breakfast and happy hour in the shaded courtyard was always a delight and a great way to start and end each day. Each evening we met other guests which made the Hotel feel very intimate. The room was cozy (for three) but the bathroom had been updated so we were pleased with the accomodations. When we return we will stay at Hotel Santa Maria.

We stayed four nights at the Hotel Santa Maria to celebrate our honeymoon. The staff was friendly. The breakfast every morning was delicious as were the cappuccino's they made on request. The room was cozy and very clean with a perfect bathtub for soaking. It was tricky to find initially, but the waiters at the cafe around the corner seemed very accustomed to pointing the way without us even asking. And Trastevere was a good neighborhood to center our trip in. We were able to walk to the Vatican AND the Coliseum. The only flaw was that we were able to hear our neighbors' every word when they parked themselves outside their door instead of in the courtyard where their voices would have dissipated. We could also hear them a little in their rooms. Also, it is closest to a tram stop instead of a metro stop, the trams being more complicated to sort out in our first moments in town. Overall, would absolutely recommend this hotel and stay there again.

Our stay was absolutely great: the kind receptionists told us everything we needed to know to get the most out of three days Rome. The atmosphere, coffee, breakfast, room and lovely garden did the rest. How busy is the city, how nice it is to 'come home' and relax for a while to be able to get back at it. Great time, we'll be back soon. Trastevere is the nicest area, hotel Santa Maria is the best place to stay. Thanks for everything!

This is a very charming place to stay in a wonderful neighborhood in Rome. I previously stayed near the Spanish Steps and I like this area much better. It is a short cab ride to the Vatican and to Old Rome. The rooms are clean and simply furnished. The courtyard is a great way to start your day with a nice breakfast and cappucinos under the orange trees. The staff is helpful and the price is right. We had 2 triple rooms and were very pleased with our acccommodations. The staff made all transfer arrangements for our arrival at the airport and departure to the cruise port. The restaurant recommendations were great as well. We felt very safe in the neighborhood and loved walking around all the shops and restaurants. It was very quiet at night, even though it's in the middle of the city. I would definitely stay here again.

Everything written by others is true. Very nice place but I would only recommend it for non-summer months. I would rate it higher except for the temperature factor, one that negatively impacted the hotel experience. That is, the air conditioning (AC) is centrally controlled and set at around 78-80 degrees. If you are used to cooling off by returning to a cool ac when it is hot outside and you have been walking for a few hours, then you will be out of luck. Rome is hot in the summer and many places in the area do not have ac.
