Our extended family of 5 (ages 59-10) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Santa Maria on our first trip to Rome. It was quite surprising to find how it is tucked away down an extremely quiet street in Trastevere, Rome. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, we LOVED our delicious breakfasts outside in the peaceful serenity of the orange grove garden. It was also lovely to come back from site seeing and enjoy this outdoor area for the late afternoon cocktail hour. (complementary snacks) The staff couldn't be nicer - very pleasant and accommodating. We hope to return there on our next trip to Rome!

We were 5 women traveling together. We called it our "lost and found" tour! Each of us misplaced something of value on this trip. Two of us "lost" something at the Hotel Santa Maria. The staff here was so helpful to us and were not annoyed at our antics. It is a absolutely charming, quiet, peaceful get away from the hubbub of Roma. You truly feel as if you have walked onto a movie set as you enter the gates and the surrounding area makes it easy to walk to a delicious meal at any time. The patio are was our favorite and the afternoon apertivo was delightful after a very warm day in crowded Rome.

We stayed here in May 2009 based on nothing more than the reviews on Tripadvisor and once again I wasn't disappointed.

As others have said this hotel is clean, quiet and well-located.

The rooms aren't big but very nice and spotlesslessly clean. It appears that the place was either fairly recently renovated or very well upkept or both.

The location was excellent as far as we were concerned. Its a bit of a walk to the touristy stuff (colleseum, Trevi, etc.) but no big deal. We would walk to all the sights and at the end of the day if we ended up too far from the hotel we would just take an relatively inexpensive cab ride back. The immediate neighborhood is great. Abour a million reasonably priced and tasty restaurants within a 15 minute radius of the hotel. Lots of interesting shops as well. Less touristy than other parts of the city.

The courtyard surrounded by orange trees was ideal for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. Breakfast was basic but good and the service excellent. Afternoon snack was also nice though we weren't always able to take advantage of it.

The desk people were always helpful in booking tours, recommending restaurants or just giving some general advice.

The only downside I can think of is the churchbells at the Santa Maria go all night every 15 minutes. But I'm a light sleeper and it didn't really bother me.
Also, it can be difficult to find as its on a tiny street hidden among other tiny streets in Trastevere. We just told the cab drivers to drop us off at the Piazza Santa Maria and we walked the last two minutes back to the hotel. That's the only cons I can think of about this hotel.

Of the four hotels we stayed at all over Italy this was my favorite and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here agin or recommend to family and friends.

Location, location, location. In the heart of the Trastevere, close to everything but away from it all. This time we had a room in the back. So quiet that we almost missed one of the included breakfasts, which would have been a tradgedy given the quality of food and the unforgettable capuccinos. Once again we bought the three day Museum Pass which includes free use of the Rome transit system, buses and metro. Once you get the hang of it you can zip around the city with ease.

Liked Best: location and capuccinos

Liked Least: cost, but it is Rome!

My husband and I recently stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria. This was our second time at this hotel in the past two years. The rooms and bathrooms are very clean with tile floors. They offer a nice breakfast in the morning of eggs, pastries, cereal and fresh fruit. The courtyard with it's beautiful orange trees and tables is very peaceful and perfect for eating breakfast and relaxing after a long day of touring the city. Everyone from the front desk, housekeeping and in the dining room were very friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to help us with transfers to and from the airport and transfers to and from the port for our cruise. They even helped us arrange a car and driver to help us move our daughter out of her apartment. The hotel is in a great location in Trastevere with many restaurants within walking distance. local buses and trams are close by. We hope to return to Rome and will stay again at the Hotel Santa Maira.
