Just read the review by empederindo. I can't believe we stayed at the same hotel. First of all, what is meant by "might be OK for someone from the Mid West?" I'm from Chicago, and we know quality and value when we see it. HSM has both. This is not the Four Seasons - so if you are looking for 5 star luxury, move on to the Hassler or De Russie. But if you would enjoy a small and charming oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Rome, then HSM should please you. The rooms are not deluxe by any means, but they are comfortable, a decent size, and have some charm (stenciled walls and leaded glass windows.) The bathrooms are small and the hair dryers are not worth using, but other than that, there is nothing to complain about. All of the rooms open to a park-like setting complete with benches, tables and chairs, and orange trees. It truly is a calm and peaceful place to enjoy your breakfast or an afternoon drink and a good book. We loved coming back to HSM after a busy day of touring - it was so quiet and relaxing. Speaking of breakfast, I thought it was wonderful. There was a huge selection of breads, sweets, meats, eggs, cheeses, etc. I don't get why people would complain about it - were you expecting a Denver omelette and a side of French toast and bacon? Come on - be fair. This hotel and its staff deserve much better than empederindo dished out. I'm a travel agent and very particular when I choose hotels for my clients. I am careful, though, to match the type of hotel with the expectations of the client. I wouldn't put a 5 star-seeker at HSM. But I would put clients who enjoy small and charming hotels here. I thought it was delightful. So much so that I am going back in October for another stay.
