“A very relaxing, comfortable stay at the Santa Maria Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2009

Six of us stayed at the Santa Maria Hotel, and had a wonderful time. We had four adults in the senior suite, which was cozy but very economical - the room was clean and comfortable. The beds were on the hard side (which I prefer), but that seems to be the case in most European hotels. The bathroom was spacious and clean (if you are picky about toiletries such as shampoo and conditioner, then bring your own).

The outside courtyard was a great way to get over jet lag, enjoy the sunshine and have a nice glass of prosecco. Breakfast was excellent - scrambled eggs, cured meats, yogurt, etc.

Location of hotel is great - we walked everywhere - the Vatican, Spanish Steps, Colosseum. Favorite area to eat was the Jewish Ghetto (a very close walk). Try Il Crespini gelato near the Trevi Square - absolutely delicious. And don't forget to try the artichoke, Roman style! Mmmmm

We would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a quiet, comfortable place to stay in Rome
We stayed there at the beginning of our trip and at the end -------both rooms were great
The desk staff was attentive to our needs
The breakfast was wonderful each morning
The evening receprion was perfect for a before dinner snack
the taxi drivers find it difficult to get to this place, if you coming from the airport or train station have them arrange a car for you

We have been at the Santa Maria several times before and we have loved it ans always given it top rates. But not this time! I'm afraid the hotel has been known as a suitable place for noicy children and there extremly bad mannered parents - from the Netherlands and from Norway. If you want a peaceful stay in Rome: stay away from Hotel Santa Maria. The next time we go - in june - we will be sure to chose another hotel. We are very sorry!

I've just returned from a long weekend in Rome with family where we stayed for 3 nights at the Hotel Santa Maria Hotel. We stayed in the Mansard Suite upstairs which sleeps 5 people although there were just 4 in our party. The room was big enough, clean and very quiet (except for those bells that do indeed ring all night!). The shower was fantastic!!!! The breakfast buffet was great and had everything you would want - bread, meats, cheese, juices, yoghurts, scrambled eggs, pastries - to set you up for the day. The staff were excellent and couldn't have been more helpful. We arrived late on Friday evening and the lady on reception kindly booked us dinner locally (which was fab!) even though it was a public holiday and Trastevere was absolutely packed with Romans enjoying their night out. There are some great places to eat and get gelato in the area. The hotel is within walking distance of all the sites so don't worry about public transport, just bring a good pair of walking shoes! I'd also recommend asking the hotel to book you a car to pick you up at the airport. We didn't and our taxi driver dropped us on the edge of the neighbourhood and we found ourselves wandering around Trastevere not having a clue where were were going even though we had a map! He also charged us 60 euros for the privilege so I'd definitely say take the hotel up on the transfer. We booked a car to take us to the airport who kindly took our bags to his car parked in Piazza Santa Maria. We could have done with him Friday night but that is our fault, not the hotel's. It was lovely getting back to the hotel after a day of sightseeing and just relaxing in the little courtyard surrounded by orange trees. It definitely helped to recharge our batteries. All in all I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this hotel. It was lovely and we had no complaints whatsoever and will hopefully stay there again next time I'm in Rome - I say hopefully because they are so popular they rarely have availability! One of the best secrets in Rome is no longer a secret....unfortunately!

The location of the hotel, in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, is a great location. It's close to the historic center yet has its own character and is right off a great piazza, Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, with a beautiful old church of the same name and numerous restaurants. The rooms are around two courtyards with orange trees and umbrellad tables. The breakfast is great (including scrambled eggs and tasty meats) and service is friendly. Rooms are typically cozy (as in small) but very nicely decorated. The only heads-up I'd give is to bring your earplugs - the bells of the beautiful Santa Maria in Trastevere church ring all night long.

Hotel Santa Maria was a delight and made our stay in Rome unforgettable. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly. Pehaps the best part was the buffet breakfast which was delicious. All in all one of the best places to stay in Rome and highly recommended, I can't wait to go back!

My husband and I travel to Italy a couple of times a year to visit family and we always stay at the Hotel Santa Maria. It is a charming hotel in a great location. It is secure, quiet and the staff is so helpful. I've stayed other places in Rome, but nothing compares to Hotel Santa Maria. The rooms are simple and clean with cheery paintings and comfortable beds. Nice, modern bathrooms.

They have a lovely, quiet court yard with orange trees. In the spring the scent of the blossoms is amazing. There are chairs for lounging, bikes for a spin around the city and rooms that work well for singles, couples and families. They offer a great breakfast and afternoon afternoon happy hour, serving typical Roman treats.

The Trastavere neighborhood is with in walking distance of everything you would like to see in Rome. It is full of excellent restaurants, coffee shops and gelato. It's a neighborhood that feels like real Rome, not tourist Rome. One of the wonderful things about the Hotel Santa Maria is very close to a large piazza, which makes for excellent people watching.

The staff is great and take care of our every need. They will arrange for a paid car service to and/or from the airport which is great when you have jet lag coming in or an early flight out in the morning.

The best part of staying here is the charming location and the only thing I don't like is that at some point I have to leave! For a room in Rome, it's an excellent value.

Enjoy!
