“Very Charming and Quaint in a Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

This small hotel in the center of the Travestere area in Rome was an excellent choice for my husband and I during out recent stay in Rome to visit our daughter who is studying in Rome and lives close by. The Staff was pleasant and friendly, our room was small but sufficient, and the grounds were beautiful . We walked everywhere from the hotel and also took the tram and the bus.

Room Tip: Make your reservations early. We had wanted to stay longer but they were already booked.

Santa-Maria in Trastevere is a small but extremely cozy and nice hotel. If you like the last Woody Allen movie about Roman holidays you will be feeling like u got directly into movie scene with beautiful streets, people, wide selection of wonderful restaurants and walking distance to the most favorite touristic objects lie Colosseum or Vatican. Although it could be also great sitting in Santa-Maria beautiful garden under orange trees enjoying breakfast or free snaks afternoon. The only minor problem is small walls between rooms - so be ready to wake up early. - but this is ok - nobody is coming to Rome for sleep, right?

Firstly the positive points..... The location in Trastevere could not be better (If this is the part of Rome you want to stay in). All the major sights of Rome can be walked to, the farthest in about 30 minutes. A 5-10 minute walk takes you to the tram and bus service routes which are very easy to negotiate. The boy and girl at the breakfast room were very hard-working on the days we stayed here. This is the reason for the 3 stars for service. It was not their fault that the breakfast room was too small to cope. After waiting 10 minutes for a table to be cleared a family of 4 arrived, 2 kids to the fore, and made a beeline for the said table, with 2 parents following and seating themselves down Bad manners or ignorance on their part ? They should have been made aware of their "mistake" by the duty staff, my wife would not allow me to. The breakfast selection was very basic with no fresh fruit or canned for that matter. The breakfast cereal I opted for was out-of-date.
Negative points.... Although it sits in a good location in the heart of the biz, you must decide if the street noise and overlooking apartments are not an issue for you.
The room we were allocated was very small. The bathroom door could not be opened if someone else wanted to use the wardrobe, shelves, safe etc. The area was too small.
The actual bedroom area was ok for size, but not at the prices the hotel charges. A tea/coffee making facility in the room should be provided. There is a notice to say, do not put anything other than the hotel's goods in the frigo bar. A small car is an extra 20 euros a day. Although we were aware of the extra charge it seemed, on arrival, an unnecessary levy. Greed !
Every noise in the neighboring room could be heard (I mean everything!!). People coming and going could be heard at night at they passed directly past our window (Room 6). Stiletto heels prominent.
We saw very little of the other staff to make a judgement, although on arrival a young man, Antonio I think, helped us with our cases and I also noticed people being given advice on transport etc.
We know Italy, and Rome in particular, very well. There are many wonderful hotels in Rome with good locations, better value, and service and with more reasonable rates than Hotel Santa Maria. We had another wonderful time in Rome itself, no thanks to the 2 Star H.S.M.

We are really sorry for the negative points that our Guest found about the Hotel and, if he will give us another chance, we hope to show him how much we consider the reviews, specially the negatives, because that reviews help us to improve our service.
We usually do not respond, but this time we consider appropriate to do that.
About the car parking place inside the Hotel, we are really surprised that the daily rate of euro 20,00 has been considered too much. We are the only one in Trastevere that has a private parking and the rate of euro 20,00 per day, reserved only to our guests, is a friendly rate considering that the private Car Parking in the Center of Rome is from 25,00 to 50,00 euro per day .
Furthermore the parking price is clearly indicated in the confirmation.
The other point that we don’t understand is the ‘basic’ breakfast with the absence of fresh fruit.
The seasonal fresh fruit is always on the buffet and not only in the morning for breakfast but 1 fruit tray is available for our Guests throughout the day.
We appreciate the suggestion about the canned fruit but we would like to remind what we offer on our buffet:
orange, pineapple and grapefruit juices, 5 different kinds of cereals , fruit and natural yogurt, natural yogurt sugar free, ham, Parma ham, salami, Caciotta Siena, Philadelphia and fresh ricotta cheese, cherry tomatoes, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, original extra virgin olive oil… jam, butter, Nutella, large selection of croissants, plain, with chocolate, with cream, with jam, and fresh bread, different kinds of biscuits and cakes baked every morning from the Bakery ‘La Renella ‘ in Trastevere.
Black coffee, espresso, cappuccino, caffelatte, decaffeinated coffee, barley coffee, hot chocolate, large selection of teas as many as you want…we think that, for a 3 stars Hotel, this is much more than ‘ basic ’.
We would like to thanks to TripAdvisor for giving us the opportunity to show our point of view.
The improvement of our service is our main target and we keep on doing our best to reach it.

Cordially,

The Management

My father and his partner stayed at this hotel a couple of weeks ago and they loved it. They said everyone was friendly and helpful and that they couldn't fault it. it's in a great area of Trastevere where they enjoyed the proximity of nice local bars and restaurants. Staying in this hotel 'made their holiday' and they couldn't fault it. They said it was a little oasis. The hotel also arranged the taxi service to the airport both ways and it was prompt and efficient. They would definitely highly recommend it.

We stayed here on our first night of a 10-day backpack trip and it was the perfect accommodation after a long day. It was expensive and the room was a little small but the beds were comfy and it was the only place for the whole trip that had a bathtub. Internet service was great and they have free bikes to explore the city on. Awesome breakfast. They held our bags for us for the day, too.

Great location for a city break. Peaceful, lovely courtyard in secure area in central Rome. Close to restaurants and all sights. Rooms small and fairly basic. Would be good to have tea and coffee facilities. Expensive t 160 UK pounds per night, but hen we stayed in peak Easter week.

We stayed here for a week in february. This hotel is in a nice area. Trastevere felt safe to walk around in at all times, and there were some nice shops nearby. The hotel included a breakfast buffet, but the only hot food each morning was eggs. Plenty of choices though. There was no evening appetizer hour, though the person at reception offered to get a drink when we asked about it The room itself (junior suite with two rooms and a bath) was very austere. No amenities like a microwave, coffee maker, kettle, or even plastic cups, no separate seating or dining area. We were provided with two plastic cups after asking at the front desk. There is a mini fridg but hotel instructions say not to place any of your personal items in it. The rooms were also lacking in sound-proofing. I could hear the person in the next room.... e'hem... shall we say using the bathroom facilities. Also, the bell in the Santa Maria church rings every 15 minutes. All night long. Which means you hear the bell every 15 minutes. All night long. The staff was very polite. We would not stay here again, but many of the challenges were simply a matter of hotel infrastructure which management really can do nothing about.
