“Nice location, nice staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012 via mobile

We stayed here during our second visit to Rome. We came to like the neighborhood during our first visit, but stayed at this hotel during our second. The staff at the hotel were very nice and accommodating. The location is great and the setting- with a courtyard just off the street is a nice break from the bustle of the city.

We stayed here 4 nights last week and were absolutely happy with our choice. The rooms are quaint and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The daily breakfasts and happy hour apps were delicious. The location ammong the narrow cobblestone streets gives you a real sense of staying in Italy. We will definitely return.

We actually found this hotel through Rick Steves' travel book for Italy. Although it is not the least expensive place you can stay, they do have discounts if you pay in cash and also if you stay a certain amount of nights (not sure how many, but we were there for 5 nights). We pretty much knew what to expect, but it was even better than we had thought. It is in Trastevere on the other side of the Tiber. This area of Rome is filled with narrow cobblestone streets and is just such a great neighborhood to walk around in. The hotel itself has an outside gate which you need to be buzzed into when entering. We had a jr. suite which was perfect for us. The bedroom was a good size with a good sized flat screen tv, nice sized bathroom with an actual shower and tub and a second room with another place to sleep and another tv and the closet (w/a safe). We used this room to store our luggage and use the closet. Right outside of the rooms (all on ground level) are lovely sitting areas and orange trees. Breakfast is included and they are quite generous with what they serve....scrambled eggs, which were kept hot and they were good, platters of ham and cheese, fresh sliced melon and other fruits, proscutto, an assortment of dry cereals, great breads, several fruit juices (the orange was the best I have ever had outside of the U.S. and it comes from a container), service at your table for hot beverages, cappucino, coffee, tea, etc., also a 3 tiered serving of various small pasteries. You will not leave hungry. At 5:30 they have a happy hour (in the same room as breakfast) with a table set with various finger foods (note...beverages are not included as we thought they were, but they are reasonably priced). You can sit in the room or outside under the trees, all very peaceful and lovely. The entire staff were very helpful with a special shout out to Chiara. Everyone speaks English which is very helpful, but we also like to at least try to speak Italian when we are there.
Piazza Santa Maria (named for the church that sits on this site) and a must to see. This was a 2 minute walk from the hotel and everyone gathers in the piazza at all times of the day into the night. Highly recommend having a late night grappa and people watch, very enjoyable.
This was our 3rd trip to Rome, and by far the best, both in the choice of our hotel, restaurants and Trestevere. We would definitely stay there again and recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of Rome.
Best restaurant we went to there -- Hosteria del moro da Tony. We found it by accident and ended up having 2 dinners and one lunch there - great food, decent prices, good people watching, if you sit outside, and just an all round great experience.

We stayed at the Santa Maria for 5 nights on our visit to Rome last year. We've been to Rome several times, and wanted to try a different experience (previously rented apartments, location on east side). The Trastevere area is fantastic! Great nightlife. It's wonderful to stroll through the streets, pick up a gelato and watch the world. There are probably 30 great restaurants with a short walk -- all of them delicious. We loved walking through the tiny streets. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the rooms are lovely.

This is a gem of a hotel, in Trastevere, with all the great restaurants, but with easy access to the centre. The bed and bedding was very comfortable and everything very clean. Breakfast included fruit, yogurts, bread, eggs, cheeses and meats. All fresh. It is surprisingly quiet for Trastevere, but the best thing is the staff - everyone of them helpful at all times.

Room Tip: Lower rooms are easy access for families and those with lots of luggage

I stayed in this hotel on my first trip to Rome in 2000, the year it opened. When I returned this year, I didn't even consider another hotel. It's a great location, close to everything, easy walking distance. Only a few meters from the Piazza Santa Maria, where friends and visitors gather every evening for dinner, drinks or passegiata, the hotel offers an oasis of calm and quiet from the invigorating activity of this up-and-coming neighborhood. The rooms are wonderful, the shower even better, and you will be completely satisifed with the amazing breakfast, which is included. The hotel owners and staff are terrific and will take care of you very well. Trust your trip to Rome to the Hotel Santa Maria. Believe me, you can.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with a companion but need separate beds, the junior suite is fantastic!
