“Lovely hotel, ideal for family stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

We unexpectedly stayed here after being let down by another hotel, where our booked room was unavailable and fortunately in peak season they had a suitable room. Well, all turned out much better in the end as the Santa Maria was excellent. We were greeted by helpful, pleasant staff. The four of us (2 adults and 2 teens) had a large suite, which was spotlessly clean and comfortable. There are a number of good restaurants metres from the entrance. Having breakfast, under the orange trees, you would not think you were in a large, bustling city. We would definitely return on a future visit to Rome.

Nothing overly luxurious - clean, plain rooms, a beautiful courtyard for enjoying an excellent breakfast or for rest and contemplation. Friendly, helpful staff. Free, ramshackle bicycles. Trastavere is busy and the squares are filled with tourists in July, but there are plenty of quiet side streets to get lost in - literally. A great atmosphere.

The staff was very nice and helpful.
The hotel is one stone away from Piazza Santa Maria di Trastevere, so great location full of restaurants and in July there was live music in the piazza which added a lot of charm to the visit.

The room was nice and big, but the key thing for this hotel is the service and the location. They also have a lovely patio in the middle where you can have your breakfast and it is quiet.

I stumbled across this hotel during my first trip to Rome two years ago, and I made sure to research it for a future visit! I have now stayed there four times, and all but the last time (in November 2011) were perfect! This is a beautiful, tranquil hotel (a former convent) in the heart of the bustling Trastevere area of Rome. The rooms are very comfortable, and even have bathtubs, which is rare in Rome! There is a wonderful courtyard where you can eat breakfast and also have an aperitivo, or just simply hang out! There is a buffet breakfast every morning and an aperitivo in the bar every evening, and there is also a computer in the bar available for guests to use.

Once out of the gates, you are steps away from the Piazza Santa Maria di Trastevere which is bustling with a fountain, cathedral and loads of bars, restaurants and shops. Because Trastevere is so popular, especially with younger people all day and night (a couple of the American universities are in the area), it is hard to believe that the Hotel Santa Maria is in the midst of all of this!

The hotel is also right around the corner from my favorite restaurant in Rome, Trattoria Augusto. Open since the 1950's, this family run restaurant is Roman style and its menu does not change! I highly recommend the cacio e pepe pasta dish and the pollo alla Roman or arrosto (Roman or roast chicken). It is a small restaurant and lines form everyday but it is worth it!

While I mentioned that three of my four stays were terrific, I will tell you why the fourth was not quite up to par. The room I was in was in the "annex" and it smelled as if it had previously had water damage. Also, and I don't know if this is because it was November and the number of guests was low (I had previously stayed there in May and September), the evening bar service/aperitivo buffet was spotty. I was really looking forward to it one night and nothing! I stayed for five nights and I belive it was closed three of the five nights (this had never happened during my previous stays). The other thing was the roosters cackling at the crack of dawn! Yes, there are roosters living on an adjacent property; they started up at 5 AM, followed an hour or so later by the church bells! Also, I was disappointed that the front desk staff did not know anything about a chocolate festival that was taking place in Trastevere. I had seen flyers around the neighborhood about it, and when I asked the front desk about it, they did not have any information to give me (I decided to check it out and it was awesome! it featured chocolate candies and cookies from various regions in Italy!).

Hotel Santa Maria is on the expensive side, but I believe it is worth it for the quality of the accommodation and location, location, location! You can walk across the Tiber to Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori and the Pantheon in about 15-20 minutes. You can also walk across the Tiber to Piazza Venezia and head toward the Colosseum in about 15-20 minutes (along that route you will also pass the old Jewish Quarter and the piazza with the beatiful turtle fountain). There is also the green street car - line #8 that goes into Trastevere from Largo Argentina.

The hotel Santa Maria was fantastic from when we booked to the moment we left. We made use of their airport pick up. The driver was really lovely and very knowledgable of the city pointing out sites on the way to the hotel. On arrival all the staff were so happy and helpful with a fantastic aperatif served from 5:30.
On day two they were so kind and helpful when I returned from hospital with a broken ankle, helping me from the taxi getting me drinks, searching for crutches and offering to bring meals.
They then looked after me while my husband sorted out our return and tried to salvage something of our trip for our two children.
Whether you are well or need some tlc the Santa Maria will provide you with a wonderful oasis of calm, within its beautiful courtyard, from this great city which provide great fun for the rest of my family.

Perfect base for sightseeing in Rome. Trastevere has an authentic feel, great atmosphere and lots of choice for restaurants/bars etc. The hotel is unique. Indeed an oasis, quiet, clean and with friendly and helpful staff. And no noise through the night from roads! Suite was ideal for our family of four. Everything we required was catered for. We were able to walk to the main sights within 20-30mins, whilst being able to return to the hotel to relax in the comfort of the courtyard or on the terrace. Use of bicycles was a nice touch and allowed early morning trips down the Tibre before an excellent breakfast. Will be recommending to friends.

Room Tip: Book direct for family suites.

Beautifully designed courtyards of orange trees provide the shade for the hot days and the most charming place to have a wonderful breakfast, included in price. The air conditioned rooms and bathrooms are clean and spacious. It is an easy walk over the Cisto bridge to Campo dei Fiori and the Historic Center.
