When we first arrived in the area around the Termini Station, just two blocks from the Contilia, it was almost midnight. The neighborhood seemed a little scary and dirty. We were shocked when we woke up in the late morning and found ourselves in a cute little area with shops and small restaurants. Apparently we'd been there late enough that everything was closed, but the street sweepers, who are incredibly diligent in Rome, hadn't been through yet. We were pleasantly surprised. The hotel had air conditioning, which was amazing as we were there in the middle of a heat wave. The staff was friendly and the free breakfast was satisfying. I'd stay here again, the location is brilliant, only four blocks from the Coloseum!

The Hotel Contilia is a great value. Our room was a triple with a small balcony opening onto the central courtyard. The room was large by European standards with a large bathroom that looked as if it had been recently updated. The desk staff is friendly and speaks English. We especially enjoyed the free wifi. The air conditioning worked well and our room was very quiet. The continental breakfast consisted of rolls, pastry, ham and cheese, cereals, yogurt, juice and coffee. The hotel is located within 5 minutes walking distance to the train station and a metro stop, as well as many major sites of Rome. The neighborhood looks a little run down, but I was never afraid of walking around even at night. There is a market nearby and many cafes and shops in the area. I will stay here again next time I visit Rome.

This hotel was disappointing for me. Stuff was nice and helpful but rooms were small and bathroom was ridiculous. AC was too loud. It seemed clean to me though.
Location is ok, you can walk to all main attraction sites. Anyway i wouldn't come back, and if i wanted to stay longer i would change the hotel.

We booked this hotel on line from UK via the UniTravel website. We thought that we had booked a bed and breakfast called Budget B & B with a little kitchen that we could use but when we arrived the staff told us that the B&B was now part of the Hotel Contilia. I have to admit I was a little disappointed not to have the kitchen facility as I hadn't even taken a travel kettle, plus it meant we had no fridge. Having said that, the Hotel Contilia was very nice. The staff were very friendly and pleasant, the hotel was what I would describe as typical old italian - ie marble floors, tired worn looking curtains and fabrics, but all in keeping with the property. Small rooms with high ceilings, reasonable bathroom although no shelf to stand shampoo etc and our air conditioning worked fine. My son and I were travelling with his friend and his mum (long weekend break for their 16th birthdays and to celebrate end of GCSE exams), and it would have been nice if we could have been on the same floor instead of us in 402 and them in 115 - having to text to meet for breakfast etc instead of a short trip down the hall. The location was fine so long as you stayed on this side of Termini railway station - the other side was as you'd expect near a station! There were plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes etc nearby, plus a small supermarket between the hotel and the station and a larger one up near Maggiore which was very well stocked. Having said that the continental style breakfast was actually quite nice. Tea, coffee, juice (packet flavour), cereals, fruit, yoghurt, bread, cheese, meats and lovely pastries. We mostly used the open top bus to get around (a couple of minutes walk to Maggiore stop), excellent value as we got a family ticket (2 adults plus our 2 15 year olds) which gave us 2 days unlimited travel for 45 Euros total. The two routes covered the whole of the area we wanted to visit so saved a lot of achy feet and calves. Most major sights were reduced rate or even free for the boys (under 18). Only downside was that the buses stopped around 7 or 8pm depending on the route you were on so we did use the metro at night to go and see Colosseum, St Peter's, and Trevi Fountain lit up. The metro was ok, wouldn't want to be traveling alone down there but I would say that about metro anywhere in the world. All in all a good hotel, in a good location. Not luxury but then we only paid 480 Euros for 3 nights (total for 4 people) so 40 Euros each per night.

My husband and I just returned from Rome. We're in our early 30s, and typically prefer to stay in hotels that are 1) centrally located to major city sights, restaurants, nightlife, etc. OR very close to public transportation, 2) clean and 3) a good value for the money.

We booked a room at Hotel Contilia for 3 nights on priceline for $80. After staying there one night, we checked out and booked a different hotel for our remaining two nights in Rome. We're usually pretty easy to please and would normally never even consider checking out of a hotel early knowing that we would lose the money we had already paid, but we were so disapppointed in the quality of the hotel that we did.

LOCATION: It was located on the border of a seedy area by Termini station. If you walk a few blocks in the wrong direction, it's filthy and strewn with garbage - not a place I'd want to be walking at night.

ROOM: When we arrived, the concierge gave us the option of staying in the hotel or in an apartment next door (at no extra charge), since the hotel was overbooked. At first, we decided to stay in the hotel. But when we went to our room, we saw that it was badly in need of updating and tiny. It was equipped with rock-hard beds, thin, worn blankets, and a bathroom ceiling covered in mold. We asked if we could see the apartment instead, and the concierge happily offered to show it to us. We immediately felt more comfortable there after seeing that it was very spacious, clean, and fairly updated. The only drawback: no air conditioning. We decided to stay in the apartment, but after spending one long sleepless night in the sweltering heat on a hard bed, we decided to check out of the hotel.

BREAKFAST BUFFET: Overall, it was pretty bad. They offered a small selection of cold cereals, pastries, yogurt, cold meats, cheese, and juices. While the pastry I ate was tasty, the milk for the cereal and the yogurt were sour.

On a positive note...
SERVICE: The service was outstanding. The staff was friendly, polite, and very helpful.

Despite the excellent service on the part of the hotel staff, I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.
