I stayed at the Contilia for five days. The air conditioning was non existent. The hotel was definitely not modernized or updated. It was by far the smallest bathroom I had on my entire trip. The place was clean and my room was cleaned every day of my stay there. The area of the hotel feels worse when walking from the train station than when coming back from the main sights of Rome. The breakfast was terrible. Honestly, all I need is some juice, pastry, and fresh fruit like an apple and I'm happy. The only thing they served was stale buns, cheese and cold meat. I stayed there because it was cheap and easy to explore Rome from. Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.

My girlfriend and I found the Hotel Contilia after walking around door to door to many hotels in the Termini station area. This hotel was by far the best looking hotel in the area compared to others of similar price, it looked clean and the air conditioning and TV worked (only CNN and some MTV italia were in english however). The reason I give this hotel only 2 stars is the bedbugs! My girlfriend and I woke up every morning very itchy with bedbug bites all over our bodies. As someone who has never experienced bedbugs before, I must say that they were horrible, the itching lasts for weeks (much worse than a misquito bite). We have been home for 2 weeks now and the itching is just starting to go away.

We were in room 218, so I'm not sure if this problem is isolated to that room alone, but the bedbugs truely ruined the experience for us. Other than that the Hotel Contilia is the best bet for a reasonable price in the area, the staff were very friendly and the hotel was very close to Termini station (about a 5 minute walk). Contrary to some reviews the area was not at all "shady", a little dirty perhaps but I felt very safe, and the restaraunts in the area are very charming, and very reasonably priced. The hotel is also within 10-15 minutes walking distance of the colosseum, and many other neat Roman ruins.

All in all I'd say definely visit the Hotel Contilia if you're looking for a reasonable price (we got 70 euro a night, with some bargaining). But definetly beware of the bedbugs!

Me and my wife are very surprised to see all the positive reviews on Contilia. We had the worst possible experience here. We booked two days from an online website in the US. We arrived at the hotel and soon after, my wife didn't feel safe in the neighborhood. That termini area is somewhat shady. The room was in a pretty run down condition. Shower door was broken, there were stains all over the comforter (white ones, use your imagination), AC didn't work properly, ornaments, towels, furniture all in very bad shape.

This is the good part so far.

We wanted to check out from this hotel after our first day. The manager didn't let us, said we had to pay for the entire duration of the reservation. We kindly said we don't feel safe here and the rooms are in a pretty bad condition, the manager and the staff argued very aggressively saying it is impossible for us to check out early, kept saying they have a 48 hour cancellation policy. They did not understand the difference between cancelling a reservation and checking out early due to customer dissatisfaction. I insisted on not paying for the second day as I had no intention of staying here and the manager called the police. Then he started yelling at us and told us to evacuate our room in 10 minutes or he will throw away our stuff on the street. At this point, he is calling the police to make us pay for the second day AND he is throwing our stuff on the street, notice this guy's logic. He even showed us the finger (with his arm, Italian way). It was so ridicilous that the term unprofessional does not even begin to describe the staff at this hotel.

We waited for the police for a while, they didn't show up. In the meantime, the manager was making calls to the station from his cell phone. Most probably the police could not have done anything anyway since they had no check out policy stated anywhere - but we offered half price for the second day so that we can go on our way and not waste the entire day waiting for the police. They took the offer with much animation and showmanship.

Stay at this ridicilous establishment at your peril.

This is a great hotel only a couple of short blocks from Termini. I stayed 2 nights and my room was spotless. The front desk people were wonderful and offered nice restaurant suggestions nearby. The breakfast selection was above average with good food. All was wonderful here and I would return again. Although this was close to the station my room was very quiet and the walking back to the hotel after dinner was fine. This was an excellent choice for me and a very good value!

A really nice hotel, don´t know if I just had luck to get that nice room I got. But is hard to understand that this nice hotel only have 3 stars. If you look at it overall-then yes I can see why the hotel only has 3 stars.
They don´t have laundry services (but there is several around the hotel), or room services-which is some of the needs to be ranked at a 4 stars hotel.
But the rooms (or my singel room) are really nice and beatiful. (the standars are high at this hotel!!) And clean too! The bathroom with marmor floor felt new and fresh, well in fact the whole hotels marmor floor felt new. They sure know how to clean there. Many hotels have nice decorations, beutiful designs and so on...but unfortely not all hotels seams to prioritate cleaning.

The staff are even they really nice. Many people in Italy (or rome any way)are bad at english, and sometimes it can be hard to try to communicate with them. But this staff are good at english, and they are very helpful. I tried to find any mailbox to post my postcards, and asked several people near the termini station where I could post my postcards. But know one could tell me (not even the policemen I asked) - because no one I asked knew a single word on english.
So I went back to the hotel, and they told me how the postboxes looked like, and where I could find them. (hehe, yeah I know-stupid of me not to find the red mailboxes that was all around the station termini- but my point is-the people in rome are terrible at english, so it´s a good idea to stay at a hotel there they know english)

And no - people working at hotels in rome don´t necessarily speak english. I believe I tryed to book rooms in 4 other hotels, but not one of the staff at these hotels could english. They tried to mix some english words with italian - which is nice, I mean they really tried. But in a city that I had never been before, It felt important to have someone that knew the area that I could talk to.
of course - you could always talk to the turist information...if you have time and don´t bother to have to stand in line for a while...

This is a nice hotel - definitely worth the money! I don´t believe any one that is looking for a 3 stars hotel are going to be disappointed at this hotel and its staff.

When I get back to rome (and I will beacuse I throw a coint fontana di trevi...) I will definitely come back to this nice hotel...
