“Not what it used to be”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

When my wife and I moved to Rome 20 years ago, the Shangri La Corsetti was always exceptional in terms of service, decor, and quality. We stayed at the hotel during our move and later often went to the top-rate seafood restaurant at the hotel over the course of several years. It was one of our favorites... Always a top performer.

Recently my family and I stayed at the hotel while on vacation. It is with sadness that I report that this hotel is no longer the same hotel in terms of friendliness or quality. Other than one really nice waiter at breakfast, the staff was not as friendly as in the past. The desk staff and the restaurant crew at dinner were clearly not interested in American families any longer. One waiter at dinner showed clear disdain for having to wait on us. We had hoped to show our kids one of the great places from our past and were shocked at how it had changed.

The hotel and restaurant seems to have moved towards hosting conferences and conventions now. The decor was much more business-like. If you are going to Rome or EUR for a conference or business, the hotel would be acceptable. However, as a family or tourist, I can no longer recommend it.

I stayed here because of its proximity to work and meetings.
Initially I booked here thinking it was part of the Singapore based Shangri-La chain, but I found out through the internet that it isn't. Based on this I had mediocre expectations, so was very pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel itself and my stay was quite good (for European standards at a similar price).

-The lobby had a nice old world charm to it, and reception were very helpful with calling taxis
-The room and the bathroom is clean and comfortable, but a little tired and in need of updating, but everything (including free internet) worked well. Breakfast was included with the room rate.
- Be careful of the "calling bell" both in the bathroom and the room (in the room it is a button with a picture of a cocktail on it) - this calls the floor caretaker to your room for when you need something (e.g. a drink, or an emergency). Clearly normal in Rome, but can be confusing if you don't know about it!

Overall a decent stay if you need to be near the EUR district of Rome.

Although the hotel is a little bit out of the city centre it is within a 15 minute walk of the Metro, which is then only 20 minutes from the centre. The rooms are of a good size and the facilities in the hotel are generally very good. Some of the staff could perhaps smile a little more often but responded to any questions that I had. One small thing - my wife and I still do not know why you are forced to wear a swimming hat before being allowed into the pool ?

Although the premises are not so up-to-date, you should nevertheless give this hotel a try, either if you are in town on a business trip and your agenda pivots around the EUR neighbourhood, or if you are a family and want to spend a couple of days in a comfortable place in Rome, near to public transportation (underground, buses), a shopping mall (EUROMA2, at walking distance) and green parks all around. If you cannot help to go shopping and buy the world uptown, a taxi from the city centre for you and your shopping bags will cost you about 20 euros one way.
For those concerned about the large trafficked lanes in proximity, my personal experience is that sleep is not affected by noise at all, not even in the early morning, as it is muted by trees.
Some rooms have a view on the garden and the outdoor pool, open during the summer.
Breakfast is in line with four star hotel standards, served both in the room, at a small extra, and in the dining hall (I chose the latter): it is a continental buffet breakfast with quality tea blends, juices, milk, cakes, honey and jams, cereals and yogurt, croissants and fresh bread, plus fruit, cheeses and ham. The attending staff will promptly ask if you fancy hot beverages like cappuccino, coffee and espresso, prepared on demand by their cafeteria.
Wireless is available for free both in the spacious lobby and in the rooms.
The hotel often offers deals for families or weekend formulas.
My room was a double for single use, clean, well equipped and functioning, with a decent bathroom (bathtub/shower, bidet, hairdrier, paper tissues), fridge, air conditioning, a balcony with table and seats. The outdated touch in the common areas that made me raise an eyebrow at the arrival (the hotel sign and outside appearance, old furniture scattered a bit randomly all over the place), is surprisingly welcome in the room, since somehow it makes it look cozier and comfortable. The small round table was perfect for my laptop and allowed me to work a little while before going out.
I appreciated the environmental friendly policy, as explained in the room leaflet, to which you may adhere or not.

Room Tip: At the arrival, when they offer a hand with your baggage, do not play it sporty as I did, but allow...

It was a very, very pleasant surprise to stay at this hotel. Our touring company chose it for us, so in the beginning I only had the reviews here to read and wasn't sure what to expect from the hotel and its location, as I saw on the map it's quite far from the centre of the city and practically from all tourist sites.
The hotel looks great, well-maintained, modern facilities, cleanliness is perfect, rooms are spacious, most of them also have a balcony. The garden between the parts of the hotel is very relaxing and you get a big variety of meals to choose at breakfast.
Location: awesome, just 15 minutes walk (1km) away from the EUR Fermi metro station, then you need only 30-40 minutes to get with the metro to the main tourist sites. The walk to the metro is very pleasant - on a lane along the big boulevard, but there are many trees around and it's very green around.

I stayed in this hotel for three days and must say it was one of the best I stayed in in Italy. The hotel seems to me as traditional Italian hotel with spacious rooms and very warm atmosphere. Rooms are large and clean in traditional Italian style. It is ideally located between the business district and Rome City centre. Very nice hotel, would definitely recommend anyone to go there.

The hotel is located in the modern part of Rome city. It's a little bit far of the center of the city but there is near bus station and metro station so you can easily go to the center of the city. Staff is friendly, food is perfect, good for rest.
Wonderful ambience!
