“Living like a Roman!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Having never been to Italy, or Rome for that matter, we felt we needed a bit of "hand holding." When I read online that Giorgio could pick us up at the airport, for a respectable fee, it tipped our decision to go with Abitazione Pigneto. Giorgio waited for us outside the airport as we navigated thru confusing directions inside the airport, and we were certainly glad to see him AND that he speaks great English. Our decision to have him pick us up really paid off as he became an immediate wealth of knowledge about what, where, how to make the most of our time and money while spending 5 days there.
I do admit that when we got to the Pigneto Piazza, I wondered if I had erred. Wrong feeling. We were in a viable, family-oriented REAL neighborhood. We were living a middle-class Roman life! Being middle-class ourselves, we immediately noticed all the secure, warm sights/sounds with which we were familiar; from the fresh veg./fruit/fish and personal/home stalls as we walked the 2 blocks to the bus stop in the morning to the the magic of the same streets turning into al fresco restaurants/taverns in the evening with celebrations of tables of foods and people enjoying each other. DON'T MISS THE GELLATO STORE JUST AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE B&B! It was the best we had in the 6 weeks of traveling all over Italy. It is how we ended each day on the bench outside of the store watching the kids play hide-and-seek and ride their bicycles on the streets that are blocked off to traffic.
Giorgio & Flavio were attentive hosts. The 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment on the top floor was clean and well-cared for. You are given your own key for the private entrance, elevator, and front door. We stayed in the private bath bedroom one night & the rest in a lovely room that opened onto the mosaic tiled balcony where we were served our modest but filling breakfast each morning. However, we did share a 3/4 bathroom with another couple, which proved to be no problem. Do make sure you have coins for the bus before you get on. :->
The greatest asset was to have Giorgio review our intended route for the upcoming 5 weeks of driving thru Italy and make suggestions of places to enjoy that we would not have just by reading Rick Steve's book. We took his advice and were not disappointed. The best one being to visit Ostia Antica on the coast near Rome.
I would love to go back to this " neck of the woods." It was like visiting old friends.

Room Tip: Even though it shares a bath, I would choose the room w balcony.

This place is a gem! Located in a great vibey (at night especially) area with cafes and bars and really close to the bus that gets you into "old town". Flauvio and Giorgio were fantastic, very welcoming and so helpful in explaining everything a tourist in Rome needs to know!

Breakfast was basic, but very filling: coffee, toast, cheese and meats and fruit juice.

We shared a bathroom with another room which was absolutely fine. Always clean and always had hot water!

Will definitley recommend this B&B to anyone looking for accom in Rome!

Wandering around the streets of Rome looking for our BnB, we couldn't imagine that we would enjoy our time there. How wrong I was! Abitazione Pigneto is a really cosy, clean and airy apartment if a fantastic location, right along the 81 bus route. Flauvio and Giorgio were very friendly and tried to help with anything we needed. The beds were comfortable and the breakfast was brief but perfect to get out and about to see Rome's attractions. It's also close to a small pedestrian street with some great cafes.

This small hotel is actually a flat that has been split to accomodate 3 rooms of guests. 2 of the rooms have to share the main bathroom, and also have access to the balcony, and the third is ensuite.

The service was top class, th two owners could not do enough to help us. Fulvio's english is not very good, but Giorgio spoke it perfectly, and was very knowledgable about virtually everything in Rome and nearby.

The location is not great for the center of Rome, but the public transport (Trams and Metro) is very good and cheap. Being away from the center also feels more authentic as you are in a residential neighbourhood. Local restaurants are much better than those that tourists frequent in the city center.

Breakfast was adequate.

Room Tip: If anything, I would say that the rooms without ensuite are better. They are on the quieter side of...

We booked the room with ensuite and it was great. The room was huge and so was the bathroom. Everything was clean and tidy with everything you needed. The location was a bit out of town but it was close with the bus and metro. There was a street near the house which had lots of restaurants and bars and we just ate there all the nights. The best thing was Giorgio though. He was so lovely and let us stay in our room a bit later because no one else was coming. He also drive us to our campsite (we started a tour in the afternoon) for thirty euros which was really great (since it cost us 35 to get a third of the distance by taxi). Would definitely stay there again and was very happy with everything.

I would also "return to this B & B in a heartbeat!" Giorgio picked up my daughter and I at the airport and immediately started discussing various landmarks, tourist attractions, and Roman driving habits as we drove back to the B & B. He even took a detour to show us the location of the Colosseum and other ruins, like the ancient roman baths. Giorgio goes out of his way to answer questions and provide information about the bus and tram service which is excellent from this location. We used the "to/from Abitazione Pigneto" instructions on the back of the brochure Giorgio provided every day. It lists all the major bus and tram routes you'll need for visiting the Vatican museums, the Pantheon, etc., as well as instructions for returning to the B & B at night. The #81 bus is the best for getting your bearings when you arrive. It's a great tour in itself for 1,50 euros for 24 hours. The room is spacious and clean, and breakfast is lovely on the quiet terrace overlooking interesting rooftops and views of the city. And speaking of nightlife, the neighborhood surrounding this B & B is full of fun-loving young people, excellent family-run pizzerias, music, and people-watching. Giorgio was away the day we left, so Fulvio graciously took care of our bags while we visited the Pantheon for half a day before catching our train to Florence. If you want to experience Roman culture, food, and relax in a safe neighborhood, with easy access to all the major sights, I would highly recommend this B & B.

Room Tip: I would recommend the room with the private bath.

I picked this B&B because I read rave reviews about the owner and the location. I was very disappointed.

We requested a pick up at the airport and the owner picked us up, but was so preoccupied with the arrival of another guest (one that was not even supposed to arrive that day) that he drove insanely and it was like pulling teeth to get information out of him regarding Rome. Other reviews had said that he gave almost a tour/commentary from the airport so I sprung for the extra euros to have him pick us up. Further, he was barely around, even on the day that he said he would be, so I couldn't ask him anything whereas his friend who made us breakfast could not speak any English. We asked him to make us a reservation on a note, but he did not tell us that he had made it or even that he would try to make it. He knew my email but he only mentioned it to us two days later when we were about to leave. I didn't realize that it was cash only (partially my fault for not reading the fine print carefully enough, but it should have been the first thing on the fine print, not buried in the middle). Further, I had asked him over email whether it was okay to pay the airport pickup by credit card and he told me that it was only cash so he should have realized that I thought we could pay by credit and reconfirmed with me that he did not have credit card capability. He said he didn't confirm with me that it was cash only because he reread the email sent to me by Venere and it said cash only. However, if he went to that much trouble, he could have just mentioned it to me when he saw me the night before we left early the next morning. Instead, I felt like he was just covering himself, but didn't care that I might feel ambushed in the morning. Plus, in this day and age, even if you don't have a credit card machine, for the rates that he charges, he should at least give the option of paypal or something to pay by credit card. Further, when I asked him directions for the best way to the airport, he said he didn't know because some streets would be closed off for a military parade. That made no sense because the general directions to go to the airport won't change because of a military parade. He is a very nervous person in general.

The room itself was spacious, but the plumbing is very loud. We had the room with the bathroom en suite, but the shared bathroom is right next door and you can hear everything that happens in the shared bathroom, plus there is a weird frosted window between the two, so when our bathroom door was open at night if someone used the shared bathroom, it was like someone was turning on a light in our room. The apartment is so small that you feel like you have to whisper in your own room since the other two rooms are right there. Also, it is a very trendy area, and if you are in the ensuite room and the windows are open at night you hear people talking and yelling and music, etc until late night (thankfully it seems that live outdoor music has to stop at midnight, but people are still out and about and talking till the wee hours). Oh and there is no airconditioning so you kind of have to keep the windows open at night. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

It is very close to a bus stop and the tram, but very far from the metro. This is annoying because the traffic stinks and we generally prefer the metro. Plus, getting the bus near the B&B is fine, but sometimes the bus is had to come by in the city. We waited for 45 minutes for a bus once and that is when we decided to do metro as much as possible and only the bus to get to and from the B&B.

There is no wireless and the shared computer is very slow.

Breakfast was nice on the terrace, though it is really just some meat and cheese and toast with orange juice and coffee or tea. The owner's friend always asked if we wanted more toast, but never offered more of anything else.

Overall, very overrated.
