“Great hotel in an excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2014

Spent four days in Rome in the start of August with my wife. The city was hot, so it was nice to have a break in the afternoon in our beautiful, air-conditioned room (Mille Baci). The hotel is comfortably located in a quiter area not far away from the city center, which was easily reachable either by walking or via bus or metro.

All the necessary amenities were in the room or at the hotel, the breakfast was very good and staff always nice and helpful.

Absolutely recommendable.

Don't get me wrong, the room is nice but don't stay in room 801. It is too noisy. You can here people going up and down stairs, the people in the room upstairs, just lots of noise. Hotel staff is very accommodating. They noted our request to change rooms if one becomes available during our stay.

Dear Sir,
I am very sorry to read you stayed in one of our smallest and uncomfortable rooms.
In high season booking must be made way in advance to get the better rooms, moreover for guests that book the room directly with us we give the chance to pick personally their favorite one.
Best regards.

This was a very nice hotel and location.

It was ideal for Trastevere which is where we ate most of our evening meals.
We found we could walk there easily enough from the hotel or just return later to the hotel after eating out in Trastevere after a day out and about.

The hotel was in a nice quiet location and great breakfast.
The communication with the hotel staff before arriving was fantastic.

Minor niggles:
The drapes over the bed seemed dusty and made me a bit chesty (wouldn't pick a 4 poster next time). Angelica Bathtub was huge but not practical to lie in at all.

Nevertheless an excellent hotel which we would return to.

My wife and I have just returned from this hotel having celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary there. I chose it from reviews on TripAdvisor and have to say that it exceeded even my high expectations.

Location
First of all, this is not a city centre hotel. If you don't enjoy walking up hills, don't stay here. It is close to the top of the Aventine Hill, in a very peaceful spot, there is a beautiful park within 5 minutes walk which has stunning views over the centre of Rome. Piramide Metro station (line B - blue) is only a 10 minute walk away. 4 stops gets you to Termini and access to Line A (red) from where you can get to the Vatican (Ottaviano). If you want to walk into the centre of Rome, you could do so in around 25 minutes, passing the historic Circo Massimo on the way.

Hotel Facilities
Everything about the hotel oozes quality including the furniture and decor. There is a very pleasant outdoor seating area for relaxing with a drink close to the entrance, quaint indoor bar with comfortable seating in a lounge area and beautiful dining room for breakfast which is also used as a games room in the evening (backgammon, chess). There is an outdoor seating area through the back doors to the dining room where you can dine al fresco in the sunshine. Free, reliable wi-fi is available throughout the hotel and there is a guest iMac on the first floor. Even the Restroom on the ground floor has a shower and towels, so you can freshen up and change after you've checked out on your day of departure.

Breakfast was great. Freshly squeezed orange juice, great coffee and a wonderful selection of cereals, cold meats/cheeses and fresh fruit.

Rooms
826 (Mille Baci) on the 2nd floor was so romantic with a gorgeous four poster bed and slipper bath and separate spa shower in a huge bathroom. I don't think there is a bad room in the hotel, they are all unique. A few of the rooms also have small balconies. There is a mini bar with reasonably priced drinks. The air con was good but there was also a stand alone portable air con unit to direct cool air where you want it. The room also has tea and coffee making facilities.

Staff/Service
Very friendly and helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble. We were greeted with a welcome drink at the reception desk during check in and within 5 minutes of arrival we had two mini bottles of Prosecco and a bowl of strawberries delivered to our room compliments of the Manager to celebrate our anniversary.

Overall summary
Although I have nothing to compare this to, having never stayed in any other Rome hotels, I cannot fault the San Anselmo and would love to return one day.

Room Tip: Mille Baci (room 826) on the 2nd floor is beautiful.

Family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teenage boys) stayed here for two nights in early August. Good hotel with modern common areas - was particularly nice to have breakfast in the garden and crash out in the lounge area at the front of the hotel after sightseeing all day. Rooms not large but good size bathrooms and excellent showers. Good buffet with lots of fresh fruit and pastries and hot chocolate! We particularly enjoyed being in such a leafy and quiet area after the noise, heat and crowds of Rome even though it is only a 10 min walk (past a little bar in the local park) to the tube and from there only two stops to the Coloseum. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Try and eat in the area too - plenty of good neighbourhood restaurants off Via Marmorata

In global the hotel is clean, the breakfast is great, the garden is good too.
However it is extremely small, i couldn't even open my luggage in the room. The staff isn't that friendly as well. I had to go down to the basement of the hotel to get my shirt ironed myself. I can't say i had that experience in any other 4 stars hotel!

Room Tip: there are no good rooms, but a good garden

Dear Sir,
I am disappointed to read you were not happy with the size of your room. In fact you were assigned one of the smallest rooms because of late reservation. It is important to book in advance to get the best rooms available.
The hotel has an external laundry service which you could have used to iron your shirt with a delivery within the day, but probably you have preferred to do it by yourself and unfortunately our ironing room is located in the basement.
Anyhow we are sorry for the inconvenience you experienced and we hope to welcome you in the eternal City of Rome!

Great place to stay, in an upscale, quiet neighborhood. We walked to the metro and which made it easy to go wherever we wanted. Wi Fi worked great in the rooms, nice breakfast and staff was kind and helplful! Highly recommend staying here!
