A wonderful hotel. It was in a more residential area of Rome, but it was very close to a bus and a metro stop. It was clean and the room was fine. We really enjoyed the breakfast and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We would return and would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay at a more reasonably price hotel in Rome.

Hotel is okay, little expensive, but Rome is expensive now so relative to other hotels, not bad. Breakfast was fair and rooms have been updated but nothing fancy. Good location, can easily walk to the Vatican and even though we did not utilize it, there is a metro stop close by. Staff was not that friendly, the waiter did not like me ordering a second cappucino and the front desk was not that friendly.

Hotel Gerber in the Prati District of Rome was a great hotel to come back to after along day walking the streets of Rome. It was very quite, very very clean and had friendly staff. The bathroom was updated and had a bathtub/shower combo. Towels were changed daily.

The breakfast was very good. The owner couldn't have been more pleasant and personable.

The location was just a block from the Leponto Metro stop. Most sites were within walking distance.

The Hotel Gerber is a great location and the service was excellent. I contacted the hotel via e-mail and asked for the 'Rick Steves' travel guide discount. They immediately reduced the room rate by 10%. The location is just across the Tiber, about a 15 minute walk to the Vatican. The Villa Borghese is about a 10 minute across the Tiber, and another 5 minutes to the Piazza Navonna. Everything else in Rome is walkable.

The neighborhood is a combination low-key tourists and local Romans. There are many shops and restaurants that have something for everyone. It's very family friendly and safe.

Ask for a top floor room facing front. Ours had a small balcony that was adjacent to the roof-top patio, which had a very nice view. I highly recommend the Hotel Gerber.

We stayed at the Hotel Gerber for a week in January 2008. It is in a more residential (less crowded) part of Rome, but easy to get to on the Metro. The Lepanto stop is less than 2 blocks away. We used our weeklong Metro pass (16 euros) several times a day for getting around.

Our room was small, but clean. The TV was also small but had satellite channels so we could see some shows in English and even the US football playoffs in the middle of the night. Breakfast was in the basement but again the area was clean and well lit, and run by the friendly man mentioned in prior posts. It is a definite cost savings to have breakfast included. There is also a PC in the basement where you can check your email for 1 euro for an hour.

Speaking of cost savings, we were able to get this hotel for 100 euros a night on a winter special they were having - tax and breakfast included. That definitely made the Hotel Gerber a place to recommend, especially if you are on a budget. And we found January is a great time to visit Rome - weather is in the 50s and we encountered basically no significant lines or crowds, even at the Vatican.

The front desk staff was helpful and friendly with basic English skills. They recommended an excellent restaurant just down the street - Pizzeria San Marco - where we had a great dinner during our last night in Rome. And there is a little pizza place right around the corner where you can grab a delicious slice of a wide variety of pizzas.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Gerber.

  • Liked — Friendly, helpful staff - and they let us check in early after our long flight!
  • Disliked — Could be a little quieter - some traffic noise at night
