We stayed at Domus Aventina for 4 nights on our first trip to Italy. I don't remember the rate because we booked our trip as a package, but it was a good value compared to others we looked at. The hotel is located in a quiet, residential area, but it is a short walk to the Circo Massimo metro stop and tourist sites like the Colosseum and Roman Forum. To get to the other major tourist sites required taking the metro and switching trains at Termini station, which was always crowded and hectic. (We recommend getting the Roma Pass...free admission to 2 sites, reduced admission for others, and unlimited use of the metro. It more than paid for itself in the 4 days we had.) Our room was very clean, but a little dark and dreary. For a European hotel, the room was probably a good size. The double bed is really just 2 singles pushed together, but I think that's pretty normal for Europe. The bathroom was a bit small, especially the shower stall. My husband complained of cold showers every day. I woke up first, and my showers were always fine. Sorry, sweetie! :) Bedding was comfortable, except only one thin pillow for each of us. There is no elevator in the hotel, and its located up a hill, so it makes for a little extra exercise. Breakfast was simple but tasty...breads, pastries, coffee and juice. The staff were friendly and all that we encountered spoke excellent English. We thought it best to try to speak a little of the local language, out of respect, but found that almost everyone in Italy speaks at least some English, and would typically greet us in English off the bat. Anyway, a note about the location of the hotel...while being in a quiet area was mostly a positive thing, please use extra caution when walking around late at night. One evening we were walking back at around 11:00 pm. There was hardly anyone out and the street was a little dark. A man on the street seemed to be killing some time at a water fountain and when we passed him, he started following us very closely. When we turned off the main street to go up the hill, we cut through the gas station on the corner. He swung wide and then started following us again, up the hill toward the hotel, which is quite dark in places and no one was out on that street. So my husband turned us around and we went into a little restaurant that was open late and spent a few minutes. Never saw the guy again after that. It may have been nothing, but both my husband and I were both spooked, and he doesn't spook easily. Anyway, so the quiet location is nice, but just use extra caution if you find yourself out a little later at night because there aren't a lot of people out or places open late like there are in busier sections of the city.
