We just returned from Umbria and spent 3 days in Rome staying at the Hotel Scalinata de Spagna. It is located at the top of the Spanish Steps across the street from the upscale hotel Hassler (which has a wonderful view from its rooftop restaurant and bar). Although the Scalinatta is small its rooms are well decorated and the service is good. Charming Fabio at the front desk was very helpful with a car rental and restaurant suggestions. Breakfast was good enough and the rooftop room with adjoining terrace was delightful even though the view was limited. My only suggestion would be to replace the worn out carpet on the stairs. The location at the top of the Steps is wonderful and it is a short walking distance to Via Condotti and many wonderful sights, restaurants and shops. For location and nice rooms, I would definitely recommend this for a stay in Rome.

Its true about the location. Very Nice area and easy to get to. We took the train from the airport and the metro here. There is an ELEVATOR that takes you up to the top of the Spanish steps from the metro so dont worry about carrying your luggage up. The staff is very friendly. The hotel is tiny! and very simple...but not bad.Great WiFi connection!!Dont expect anything too luxiruious but its defintely very clean(except for the rugs on the stairway) The rooms are very small but they tell me this is normal in Rome??. Breakfast is simple but nice. The only thing that bother me was the bill, especially since the rates vary significantly from day to day if you look at the website. I book at 190/night, then when I got here, the rate was 150/night on the website for the same room period and same room. (40 Euros is a lot!).
There are no views from the rooms and there is construction going on so you cant eally fully open the windows. The view from the top where you have breakfast is not high enough to see Rome but is a cute place to have coffee. Air conditioning is excellent and the bathrooms are spotless and modern.
Overall, I think this is a nice little hotel but somewhat overprice. I would surely stay here again but only if I get a better rate (less than E150/off season). 190 is too much in the off season.

My husband, 8-year old daughter and i just returned from a 3-week trip to europe, 3 days of which we spent at the hotel scalinata di spagna. The location at the top of the spanish steps, just a few yards from the hotel hassler, can't be beat, and charming Fabio at the front desk took wonderful care of us. Our triple room offered plenty of space for the 3 of us, and breakfast each morning on the rooftop terrace, with its breathtaking view of Rome, was idyllic, not to mention delicious! As a runner, I loved having the gorgeous Borghese Gardens just a few blocks away from the hotel. We would recommend this hotel to everyone!

The hotel is situated on the top of the Spanish Steps. Charming decoration. Clean. Very friendly and helpful manager that helped us find a last minute tour to Vatican Museum. The outdoor breakfast was simple and nice. We got the room at the last minute for EUR 120 for a two-person room with double bed and EUR 140 for a 3-person bedroom. (Booked at 8 am and check in at 11 am on the same day). For people that can't walk up and down the stairs often, this hotel might not be suitable because everything is at the bottom of the Spanish Steps (restaurants, shops, metro). I loved getting up early and be the only person on the Spanish Steps :)

We arrived at the Scalinata after a bad experience in a small hotel in Florence. We were apprehensive about what we might find. We were really happy with the choice. The location was great, the rooms were small but clean. The staff friendly and helpful. The roof top was a nice place to have breakfast although breakfast was no so great - actually skip it and grab a cappacino somewhere else
We were a group of six. We all agreed that we would definitely book this hotel again
