We stayed here Oct. 14-19 - great room with windows opening to street - could hear the church bells. Once you closed the windows you could not hear the street noise. Very centrally located - easy walk to Campo De Fiori, Piazza Navonna, Pantheon and Trevi. Staff was great in helping us with questions or calling for Taxis. Taxi's had a hard time finding hotel to take us back - what worked well was having a map showing the location of the hotel - some taxi's had GPS that was a blessing. Great little bakery around the corner, restaurant across the street. We would definitely stay here again. Shower was cramped but the rest of the room was good and clean. Had a small elevator. Breakfast was Ok - nothing spectacular no fruit nor eggs but they did have ham, cheese, pound cake, hard rolls, toast, juice, coffee etc.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at Albergo Smeraldo. As others have noted the location of the hotel couldn't be better for sight seeing in ancient Rome. The positives for this hotel are it's location, cleanliness and price. I would rate this hotel as very good or even excellent if it were not for it's rude front desk staff. Every interaction I had with this staff was unpleasant. The prevailing attitude was that they were doing me a favor by letting me stay at their hotel and that any question or request that I had was an annoyance to them. Not even a simple "Grazie" when we checked out. The next time I'm in Rome I'll be staying somewhere else.

Agree with others - the location is great. The first time we stayed here a couple of years ago, we had a larger room. This time we were absolutely crammed into a tiny room. Nevertheless it was quiet and clean. We wanted to call our own taxi because we liked the company. The hotel staff insisted that we go with a company they prefer. Despite promising that the fare to the airport is standard - 40 euros - we were charged 52. I had recommended this place to friends after our first stay, but would be reluctant to do so again unless confirmed in a larger room.

We had a great stay at the Hotel Smeraldo. It's a "no frills" hotel, but the rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable, the staff was friendly and helpful, the hotel was safe and quiet, and the location is GREAT. If you are looking for a posh, elegant hotel with lots of amenities then this is not the hotel for you. But if you are looking for a safe, quiet, comfortable hotel in the heart of Rome then look no further! We didn't plan on spending much time awake in our hotel room, so this is all we were looking for.

For Rome, we felt the price was competitive for what we were looking for. And the location is hard to beat: 5 minute walk to Campo de' Fiori, 7 to Piazza Navona, 10 to Piazza Venezia, 20 to the Roman Forum, etc. We were impressed with how accessible everything was.

We would likely stay at this hotel again the next time we came to Rome (which is hopefully sooner rather than later!). We found it to be a good value.
