My companion and I (middle aged school teachers) stayed only one night at the Hotel Romae in mid-November before a cruise and were sorry we hadn´t come to Rome a week before!
I cannot emphasize enough how late November and December is a wonderful time to see Italy – no crowds, no giant bus-tours, no students on holiday, no High Season rates, no long lines (often no lines at all!) courteous drivers, vendors, waiters, who are eager for your business. Just make sure to have a folding umbrella, and warm clothing adequate for the late-autumn cold. (Wow, you can tell I teach school, right?)
The hotel is a fabulous bargain – very adequate 3-star accommodations and really superior attention 24 hours a day from the staff. It´s a real steal – especially if you book direct via internet, in which case the mini-bar (water and soft drinks) is free! Plus a nice fruit bowl, refilled every day, in the room. Everything very clean and pleasant – we couldn´t care less that there was no bathtub and there were very nice complementary toiletries in the bathroom – something one does not always get in a 3-star hotel ….
The little lounge area has all kinds of complementary tea, coffee and juice fixings 24-hours a day so you can take the chill off when you come back from sightseeing.
The hotel occupies the first floor up (not the ground floor) in an old building – the only disadvantage is that the lift doesn´t stop on that floor so your suitcase(s) must be carried up a short staircase, which Mark kindly did for both of us, (and we will pray for his soul forever for that) and Anca arranged for a private car to take us to the dock in Civitavecchia the next day. Our pre-arrival emails were answered instantly and they even sent us maps to check if we wanted to take the train (cheaper but much less convenient) to the pier. They speak English, Spanish, Italian (and probably many other languages as well) and are wonderfully helpful and pleasant!
We were able to go to the Vatican and see everything in 3 hours in the morning because there were no crowds, and our private car was punctually ready when we came back. No disappointments and no surprises!
The train station is quite close by and encloses a wonderful shopping mall, full of end-of-season bargains – plus all the street kiosks and sellers and shops which abound. In some cities (think Florence) the area near the train station is a bit “dodgy” and gives one an uneasy feeling after dark, but this area is full of restaurants and shops and was amazingly convenient for everything.
We were not interested in meeting backpackers so we did not go across the street to The Yellow Bar, which looked okay, going instead to a wonderful Café/Pasticcieria (whose name I regret not to remember) right on the next corner (go out the door and turn right) which had friendly service, great espresso and every kind of food you could possibly want.
