We had booked this hotel online after reviewing mainly the location. This on its own was inaccurate, all distances suggested were in reality twice what was suggested. Our travels had been to over 15 different cities and included many many wonderful hotels, however, this one was an extreme disappointment. The staff were perhaps the most miserable and unhelpful we had come across. Such a depressing welcome to Italy. We had needed to cancel a first night stay because of travel difficulties ( which had occurred often before) and found then manager totally uncooperative, totally rude and insulting and more importantly totally un-negotiable which astounded us as seasoned travellers. The room was claustrophobic, noisy, hot ,basically as small as a laundry should be, and can I say that if you participate in breakfast, be prepared to partake in the most miserable, measly, stale offering that we encountered throughout Europe and the Meditteranean. Do yourselves a favour.. Shop elsewhere as this place is just not accomodating..

This hotel was AWESOME!!!!!!! When my friend and I began looking for hotels for our European Vacation (a high school graduation gift which we did with our mothers) we had some fears about booking a hotel in Rome before our cruise. We had heard horror stories about no Air Conditioning and bad room conditions so we searched for a month straight and decided on this Hotel. BEST CHOICE EVER!!! This hotel was a great bang for your buck in a safe and great location! We stayed two nights and were taken care of perfectly! The staff was super friendly (especially the manager who was a blast!) and the rooms were spotless!!! Don't get excited rooms in Europe as a whole aren't big but at this hotel it was much bigger than I expected. There were no safes in the room but I didn't need one. I felt amazingly safe and at ease the enitre stay. In fact, my mother had lost one of her earrings which fell off at the bar, and as we came down to go out to eat, the man behind the front desk stopped her and gave it to her.

The breakfast in the rooftop cafe was great as well. Great view of the skyline and pretty darn good food.

Some tips for all those who stay at this hotel:
*There is a great little restaurant and the street next to where the hotel is, great prices, delicious food.
*BUY YOUR WINE AT GROCERY STORES!!!! Or any liquor for that matter! When you go into little shops you will pay twice as much for wine that is just as good as what you can buy in the grocery stores (which are not hard to find just ask in the hotel!). In fact my mother bought one bottle for 95 cents (euros).

AGAIN CHOOSE THIS HOTEL YOU WONT BE SORRY!!!!!

March 21-24 2007 - Having read the previous reviews, I was worried about staying at the Domus Aurea. It was a really nice little hotel. Ok, so the rooms aren't huge but we had 2 single beds which made a 6ft span, a chest of drawers, double wardrobe, desk and chair. We had
room to move! The bathroom was very well decorated with all marble walls and floor. Stylish corner shower and handbasin, loo & bidet for soaking our tired feet! Nice big white fluffy towels too - changed every day. The room & bathroom were spotless.

Breakfast on the 6th floor roof was terrific. It was in a glass conservatory with a great rooftop view. The choice was huge. 4 different breads, croissants, danish pastries, cakes, fruit flans, eggs, cheese, cold cuts of meat, cooked saugage, eggs & bacon, numerous jams, honey, choc spread, 5 or 6 fresh fruit, yoghurts - a really good stuff your face blow out!

Hotel staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the city. The hotel is about 150 metres from the bus & train terminus. There are 50 - 60 buses starting and ending there. A 3 day us & tube pass cost us 11 Euros. There are several local trattorias & bars within 100 metres of the hotel plus a few shops and little street market.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back there and I would definitely recommend
it to friends.

The was a decent hotel. It was a convienant location to Roma Termini station (about 4 blocks away). The lobby did smell of damp/mildew, but did not have a problem with my room. I had a single room, which by European standards was bigger than other single rooms i rented while in Italy. The staff was helpful. Breakfast had a large assortment. I would stay again.

  • Disliked — The lobby did smell bad
  • Tips/Secrets: — Do not use the internet in the lobby 5.25 Euro for 15 minutes....you can go across the street for 2 Euro for 1 hour.....however the hotel does offer free wifi service

I booked this for my husband's 60th birthday surprise and was SO SO disappointed when we checked in. The lobby smelled of toilets and the room was only 18" bigger than the bed. We could not both move around the room at the same time. On the plus side, the bathroom, although very very small was clean as was the room. Breakfast was ok.
