After reading the reviews I was scared to death about my Priceline booking at Arcangelo.

Breakfast- No ants on the food. It was a great breakfast. Good meats and cheeses. The coffee was very European (dark, bitter, strong). No complaints.

Rooms- Comfortable beds. The shower is too small with no shower curtain. That was a problem. The rooms were decorated nicely, but we were never really there. Quiet street, an oasis from the city noise.

Staff- 4 different men manned the front desk. 3 were really nice, the morning attendant wasn't too friendly. But they were all very helpful for directions, taxis, train info. They even let me use their internet connection to check my email.

I paid $200 a night and consider that a great deal. Close to the vatican, a short walk from the piazzas. Great hotel.

I'm not in to review writing, but the recent bashing by some reviewers prompted this effort. We had three rooms and three generations (from 90 to young children) stay at the hotel. None were overly impressed, but all were more than satisfied. The location is very good, particularly if you're interested in the Vatican. We also took the bus and metro, which are only 5-7 blocks from the hotel. We found the staff very accommodating, making cab arrangements and providing directions without hesitation. Unlike another reviewer, I can't imagine leaving a passport at the front desk. I haven't done that since it was required in the former Soviet Union. More germane, we had safes in all rooms, they're just a little hard to find. The rooms were clean and reasonable, but I agree with others that they are a bit drab with minor toilet issues. Renovations were on-going during our stay. The breakfast was more than I expected. Danish, pastry, hard rolls, meats, cheese, hard boiled eggs, corn flakes, juice, coffee, tea and capucchino on request. From my perspective, this wasn't a great hotel, but given the prices today in Rome, it's very good value. Maybe that's because we booked on-line for a 114 euro rate versus others staying in the hotel who paid 150. Unless you want to step up in price class, I don't believe you'll do much better than the Hotel Arcangelo.

First the good aspects. Its in a quiet road and close to St Peter's Square and the Vatican Museum. The bus terminus is only a few minutes walk away, so its easy to get a 15-minute bus to other attractions like the Colosseum.
The bad asepcts were: the room was drab, dark and quite small, with basic decorations only. The bathroom is small (only room for one person at a time) and ours had no bath, only a shower. The toilet was dirty, and the cistern water was running into the pan all the time. Despite reporting this to reception this problem was not rectified.
The breakfast is basic continental and just about adequate, with tasteless coffee, no choice of cereals. The ham had ants running about on it on some mornings.

My wife and I read many positive reviews of the Hotel Arcangelo on trip advisor so we decided to stay here during our recent trip to Italy. I'm not sure if there are multiple Hotel Arcangelo's in Rome or not but we were EXTREMELY disappointed. Rooms were tiny and dirty, we could hear our neighbor snoring through the walls and it was very stuffy. The staff was very unfriendly as well. To top it off, My wife and I decided to leave our passports with the front desk since there were no safes in the room and they told us at check-in that they could store them in the safe at the front desk- BIG MISTAKE. Upon our checkout, when we asked for our passports, they said they never had them. Even worse, the staff tried to turn the tables and tell us that they gave them back to us. They NEVER apologized for the inconvenience and did not even comp us for at least a night's stay. The staff was extremely rude during the whole ordeal.
There are plently of great places to stay in Rome - avoid Hotel Arcangelo.

THE PLUSES :
We were about 10 minutes walk to the Vatican (and I walk slowly too).
Castel Angelo/River Tiber is even nearer.
Piazza Navona (etc) is a lovely stroll, over the river, of about 30 minutes
It took us about an hour to walk to the Hard Rock Cafe (that includes strolling, stopping, looking, etc.)
You can see Basilica (vatican) from the Rooftop Terrace.
VERY quiet road, which was excellent for a good nights sleep.
Breakfast was basic continental, but there was plenty of it and it was satisfactory to keep us going till lunchtime.
Lots of Italians stay here, so that must indicate a plus.
The shutters and screen at the windows was fantastic. Totally blocks light and any noise (when there was any :-)

THE HOWEVERS : Reception staff are all suffering from personality bi-passes (restaurant staff were nice and attentive)
The Beds were THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE AND HARD beds that I have ever slept on and the pillows are so flat, without a spare!!
There is ONE blanket to 'share' in a twin room :-(
Put lots of towels on the floor at showertime, there is no curtain/screen
The rooftop Terrace, whilst lovely, is small, there is no facility to get a drink, etc. but nice to while away the hours, with nothing else to do (yea! like that would happen in rome, there is far too much to do!)
The 'BAR' is not one (basically). We saw it (it is a bar, as we would all know it!), then we were keen about having a nice little drink on the Terrace, etc. only to be told. "no, that is not a bar. you can order room service, but that will cost you €each!"
Do not expect ANY help with touristy things (ie., leaflets, directions, etc.) They will give you a map and that is only when you ask for it.
