Some of the previous reviews made me apprehensive about my existing reservation at Hotel des Artistes. As it turns out, I had nothing to be nervous about. The hotel is close to the train station which was convenient for many forms of transportation (both lines of the Metro, various buses, and most importantly for us, the train to the airport). The area is not hip but not sketchy either. There are a lot of restaurants and bars in the area by the hotel. The lobby is more that of a hostel but the halls where the rooms are were fine and our room was clean and of a decent size. Breakfast was plentiful and the rooftop terrace had many umbrellas so even though it was raining on our last morning, we were able to eat outside on the patio. Our room was on the 3rd floor and it was very quiet.

We stayed here for a week at the end of October and really enjoyed our stay The hotel is five mins from the Stazione Termini - described as a dodgy area in all the guidebooks but, as previous reviewers have said, we found the area far enough from the station to be fine and there are many good local restaurants with 10% off to hotel residents. We loved the Meid in Napoli restaurant for its tricolore salad and pizzas. We had a triple room which was very clean if a bit cosy. It was also very noisy being on the main street - I would ask for a room at the back if possible but we weren't bothered by any internal noise. we were lucky to have sunny weather all week so took our breakfast up on to the roof - a great place to sit in the sun though you do have to fend off the pigeons! i thought the breakfast was varied and more than adequate. There is no lounge area and a very small, expensive bar so I wouldn't recommend that. If the weather was bad you might want a hotel with more to do or more centrally placed but being so near to Termini means you are on the metro routes and at the bus station so it's really easy to get around all the sights. We will definitely return.

I just stayed at Hotel Des Artistes in August 2009 and it was so much fun! The people there were extremely helpful and professional. Their customer service was impeccable. They assisted us on things to do, quickest ways to get where we wanted to go, and more.

Also, there is a bar on the same street called Oasis. We went there 2 nights in a row and it was some of the most fun I had throughout my trip. Awesome music, strong drinks, and great friendly people that work there. I have and will continue to recommend this place to all my friends, family, and anyone that is traveling to Rome.

We stayed in the "annex" which is right next door to the main hotel. Our room was small, but comfy and had its own bathroom, which was a rare thing on our budget Europe trip. Most importantly it was air conditioned - do NOT go to Rome in July and stay in a hotel without air conditioning! The afternoons were so hot we had to go back to the hotel for a mid afternoon siesta (when in Rome, do as the Romans do...literally!) The breakfast was about average, but it's free, so you get what you pay for. The hotel is located in an area near the train station. Don't let the photos on Google Street View scare you: there is graffitti EVERYWHERE in Rome, and I never felt unsafe in this area, even at night. There are loads of great little restaurants around the hotel in all price ranges. You pay for wireless access at this hotel but it's cheap (a couple of Euros for 24 hours, I believe). We didn't get great connectivity in the annex however. If you plan on spending lots of time on the internet in your hotel room (and Rome is too rich with history to do that!) make sure you get a room in the main hotel building.

This room was a little more expensive than some of the others we paid for while in Europe, but Rome is a more expensive city, and this was very, very affordable by Rome's standards. The staff are friendly and - let me reiterate - it's air conditioned!

The room was very small and they managed to squeeze in a full bed and two twins. Of course, with those beds there was little room for suitcases, much less the smelly shoes of two boys ages 8 & 10. The bathroom was reasonably sized and shower was good. Location was very good, close to both subway lines and a couple of parking garages. I recommend you park your car and take the subway - and plan on a lot of walking. I would recommend this hotel to a party of two or three backpackers or friends, not for a family of four. It was too loud on the street and we couldn't close the windows because it got too warm with all of us in the room. I would have LOVED this hotel 20 years ago when I was traveling single and looking for nightlife.
