I stayed in this hotel for 1 night with my boyfriend just last week. The location is hard to find, as it’s right off a major highway, and is tucked in behind a gas station. From the outside it looks more like a motel and on the inside it resembles a 2-3 star rather than a 4 star. The reception staff get the job done, but they’re not necessarily pleasant. The rooms are fairly spacious and clean, but I didn’t know how to work the door/window so it was dark, but that’s my fault. The bathroom looked very nice but the shower went hot and cold on us, in the morning and at night. I always hate when that happens and would not expect that from a 4 star, or even a 3 star. We didn’t use the pool but it looked okay. Looked 20 times better in the promo pictures though.

It’s a 15 minute bus and train ride to the Colusseum, if you want to wait half an hour for the bus, that is. We went out during the day and got back to the area around 10pm, and we were hungry. We walked around for half an hour looking for a place to eat, and just found one seedy little bar. There is nothing around there except for the mall, which was closed by then…so we starved until breakfast that morning. Breakfast was stardard. Not great. Not bad.

Given the number of tour buses in the parking lot, it appears lots of tour companies use this hotel, in which case, the location wouldn’t really matter.

The Pro: There is a great mall right beside it, the Euroma 2. The mall is big and has lots of great stores, and even a grocery store that’s like a Walmart Supercentre. Other pros….nope. Okay, it’s cheap.

The Colombo is the kind of hotel you would only stay in if you didn't know better. I stayed in the annex, which had the feeling of staying in a motel. The most shocking thing was the breakfast: orange juice made from concentrate in a plastic beaker, and an automatic coffee machine churning out brown gunk with a noise like a vacuum cleaner. They do offer coffee from the kitchen (still from a machine, but a better one!), but you have to ask.

It may say it's 4 star, and they've invested in cheap but flashy furnishings to reinforce the impression, but it doesn't feel like you've stayed in a 4 star.

Still, it is fairly clean, and my room's TV worked. If you get sent here by your airline when overbooked, then don't panic. But if can choose where to stay, then choose somewhere nice instead.
