I just read the review 'Bait and switch' ,my wife and my experience was in reverse ,Booked the Gambinus Hotel ,switched to The Baileys Hotel.

May I state at first that we did not complain openly to the staff. That was not an option on our first visit to this wonderful city an experience which should have included our stay at this hotel.

The Gambrinus and the Baileys are owned by the same company.
The eloquent fluent Engilsh speaking middle aged male receptionist too fluidly explained upon our arrival at 23.45 that there was a 'water problem' on our floor and they had moved us to a 'more supierior hotel 'and that in his opinion 'the Bailey hotel and our room would be slightly better', they would pay for the taxi and everything would be alright senora and senore.
very obliging ,charming ,believable at nearly midnight, so we agreed but didn't really have a choice in the matter as I was not paying at the end of my stay was I ? Last minute .com had payed up ,earned their commission and have since proved that they are not in the slightest bit interested in any of the complaints I raised with them in the form of a return satisfaction email.

These were:

No assistance with our bags except on leaving
one key card only
one safe key
dark poorly lit room
carpet stained and dirty, did they expect us to notice in that light?
bathroom showing signs of poor maintenance ie, door stop gone leaving sharp screw like object projecting upwards,(bare feet?!!) chips off bath, poor shower fitting, cramped toilet and bidet arrangement, squeezed in. very noisy hair dryer, very poor sound proofing as I could hear the gentleman above coughing and ...well ..yes.. moving swiftly on

The air conditioning was not working .The room was stuffy if on, cold and clammy if off ,there was no happy medium and although I mentioned it and they said they would look at it no person did.

Breakfast? an apology for breakfast, I suggest that whoever owns this group of hotels travels to Barcelona ,Prague,Paris Brugge or London as the they will find wholesome fresh breakfasts in hotels that are two and three star. This was an insult to Four star status

On Baileys site they state Fresh fruit juice, it was not. It was in fact watered down fruit concentrate cordial . It was dreadful. The rolls I opened were old, certainly not fresh, the worst was the coffee which was granules with boiling water placed in a jug. Remember the British coffee ad with someone making the noise of a coffee percolator? well they didn't even do that !
The whole experience which should have been bordering on Gourmet according to their site was very poor and also extremely cramped.

There is no iron and no service provided either .
there are no tea/coffee making facilities in our double deluxe room.
The ubiquitous mini bar was expensive. I would not trust the freshness of anything.
The staff were polite but reluctantly helpful. It appeared that they always were teetering on ending the conversation and turning away to walk back into the office. There were smiles but no happy conversation with their tourist guests. Who do they think is paying their salary.

The above unfavourable comments were were mirrored by other guests that we spoke to at breakfast,;there is no lounge area so the only time one meets 'the fellow traveller' is at Breakfast.

I will say in their favour that the hotel was clean, the bed was large and comfortable and the linen fresh, the towels were as they state 'fluffy' .....whoopee.

Do not go to The Bailey's hotel.

We will never book on line with an agency again it leaves you at a distinct disadvantage. When I asked if I could comment about our experience I was told by the smiling receptionist that there was no written system of comment. and no online ability either.

So, I am sorry to disagree with others who applaud this place.
Our experience was not good.

Thank you for reading, oh yes I left my new umbrella in the reception area upon leaving, they must know it was mine but as perhaps expected no one has contacted me to suggest how it will be repatriated.

  • Liked — The restaurant a few hundred feet away
  • Disliked — Its pretentiousness . 'Bialey's' suggests luxury and quality to English speaking guests

Having selected Baileys as part of an AirMiles deal we were thoroughly pleased with the quality, near to the station & albeit a little out of the tourist area, peacefully quiet and comfortable room after days sightseeing. Staff extremely helpful, good continetal breakfast, very clean and satisfactory overall. We do not think this is a 4Star , though would use again. Several good restaurants nearby.

We booked Baileys after looking at several hotel websites for Rome hotels and read lots of reviews. We booked for 3 nights and we were not disappointed. It was quite easy to walk there from the Termini Station (we googled it to get walking directions). Our room was very spacious (305) on the front of the building looking out over Via Flavia. The bathroom, although not big (but ensuites in Rome tend to be small) was well equipped with lots of towels, bathrobes, slippers, toiletries, mirrors and hairdryer. The room was attractive and spacious and the bedding was clean. The breakfast room was bright and airy and very clean with a good choice of cold buffet nicely laid out. The hotel staff were excellent. They spoke very good English and nothing was too much effort. They gave lots of helpful advice on trips, sights, restaurants etc. It was a perfect location away from the hustle and bustle of central Rome, yet within walking distance to the Spanish Steps (15-20 mins), Via Veneto (5 mins), Trevi Fountain (20 mins) and Termini (10 mins). We booked the Rome Tour (Hop on Hop off bus) before we arrived for a two day ticket and a river trip and this worked really well to get around everywhere as the Metro doesn't go through the centre. We were very pleased and would return to Baileys if we visited Rome again.

I don't quite recall which website we booked this hotel from, but we paid for 3 nights and got the 4th free... So money-wise it was a great deal, considering their regular prices seemed steep compared to our 80Euro/night max budget. By the way, anytime you're booking a hotel in Italy, make sure to also try calling them directly or check other booking websites, some will give you much better rates than others...

Back to the hotel... Only complaint (hence 4 stars instead of 5) - for the first night, they'd stuck us in a tiny little double room, which had no windows to the outside world, and hence felt like a cage (I personally feel the need to always have a window) (maybe this was the "free" night). For the latter 3 nights, they moved us to a much nicer proper double room with big windows opening onto the street. This second room was very nice, no complaints, well-furnished, big bathroom, lots of space.

The breakfast was pretty good, not perfect, but they had most things you would expect, plus a few nice simple cakes.

The location was a 10-15 min walk from the train station, so I found it quite convenient. Walking into the "heart of the city", which admittedly for Rome is a rather huge heart, takes about 15-20 mins, but you can get to Via Venneto and other nice places within 10 mins, so I didn't have any major complaints about the location.

  • Liked — It was sexy
  • Disliked — The location could be a bit closer to the heart of the city

The hotel was in good shape, and the rooms clean and well equipped. The staff were friendly, and foremost: the hotel was in a quiet street without much traffic. The only thing that disappointed me was the breakfast - the options were few, unless you like cake for breakfast, of course.
