Just got back from a fab break in Rome.
Stayed at the Hotel Embassy as it seemed a reasonible priced hotel for central Rome. The location was ok, but a liitle far out at the same time. If I went again I would find a hotel around the Trevi Fountain / Pantheon area as this is more central to all of the sites.
Dont bother going for breakfast as its really not up to scratch - Ive heard this is normal for Italy.
The rooms are very basic, no tea & coffee making facilities, no bath and the shower in our room was like Japanese water tourture. On the plus side the rooms were very clean which is surprising compared to the rest of the hotel. The hotel staff are very helpful.
Note - The hotel is in a large building which another hotel uses aswell as other businesses. Its not very secure as anyone can walk in and up to the rooms as its one big mish mash.
Tip - Airport transfers by Terravison are brillant and very easy to use. The departure links with the flight arrival so no waiting around. The coach takes approx 45 mins to the Termini Station ( central Rome ) and costs 8 Euros per person oneway. A Bargain as I dred to think how much a taxi would cost as they are all metered and traffic jams are very common.
Tip - Metro, really easy to use. 75 mins cost 1 Euro. Bargain! Rome only has 2 metro lines so easy to navigate. Most stations are still a walk from the sites as the whole of Rome is not linked by the Metro line.
Most of the sites in Rome are FREE which is bonus. I suggest that you fax the Vatican for a tour of the museum and Sistine Chapel as most people queue around the block. You need to fax the Vatician around a month to 2 weeks before you are travelling to reserve a space. You pay once you get there. 23 Euros for a guide and headset. All on their website. I got a reply back within 24 hrs of faxing them and it saved around a 3 hr queue. If you can manage it, climb the 551 steps to the top of the Dome in the Bascillica. The views are fantastic. Not for the faint hearted, 450ft up!
All in all, take plenty of cash, Rome is not cheap! and wear comfy shoes!!!
Enjoy.
