“Walking distance to everything”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

We stayed at hotel Sonya for three nights while sightseeing Rome. We arrived at the train station and walked, with luggage to the hotel. Next morning, after a fabulous breakfast, we walked everywhere. We did this for three straight days. Great staff, and comfortable, quiet rooms.

As with many travelers who have booked with Hotel Sonya, we were escorted to a set of rooms in a multi purpose building( other businesses operate out of this location). It operates under the name of Hotel Opera but is not really a hotel, but a set of rooms with no amenities. Particularly lacking was a lobby that was comfortable enough to await friends. Most upsetting is the inability of this establishment to honor their reservation commitment made 4 months in advance. All correspondence stated we were booked with Sonya. Our room was small, poorly lit and not particularly clean. Rick Steve's needs to update his recommendation of this hotel. Breakfast was very good, location was great and the staff helpful.

We stayed at the Sonya annex (a block away from the main hotel). It is an old property and the rooms are tiny. That said, the room was clean, the bed super comfortable and the staff fantastic. I recommend this property without hesitation.

We stayed here for three nights after a cruise on the med. Check in was quick, our room was OK, it was clean and serviceable, and was kept that way during our stay. The bed was comfortable. We had a rain storm and we loved the fact that we could open the window all the way, sit back with a wine and watch the rain fall. Breakfast is always a subjective thing and it was fine for us, no complaints at all, but we heard others complaining, it seems though that everyone should know when you book, that breakfast is just a basic fare in this type of hotel it isn't going to be a culinary feast. The lift goes to every floor (as far as I know) which is a bit of a novelty in many of these old buildings, so that was good because we had heavy baggage, and you will get no voluntary help with your luggage, checking in or departing. However I am sure that if you needed assistance you would only have to ask.
There are plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance, including a Japanese and even the good old Chinese, in case you get tired of pasta. The lane way behind the hotel has a market which my wife loved, all sorts of stuff from handbags to clothes, bits and pieces, to fruit and veg, and only a 50 metre walk.
The termini station is an easy walk, and here as well as the trains you can get the red hop on hop off tour buses and cruise around all day if you wish. If you have the time a suggestion would be to do a full round on the bus, check out their routine and decide where you want to get off, and back on and then on the second round do your off and on visits, because there can be a fair amount of walking involved.
Do not buy bus tour tickets from the hawkers around the termini, just walk to where the buses are ( you really can't miss them ) and get your tickets directly from one of the ticket takers looking after the bus entry lines, or the ticket booth right near the buses.
All in all I wouldn't take a lot of notice of the photos for the hotel Sonya because if they are correct then they sure don't look like the room we had. In reality this is just a pretty basic old hotel in an area where there seems to be many just like it to choose from, so really just make your decision on price not on romantic writings .

We stayed two nights,The Bed comfort was good, The room was large enough for the 3 of us.
The bathroom was modern with a good shower. Our room was on the 3rd floor and backed onto a quiet courtyard. We were unable to find an English language channel on the TV set.
Most of the staff appeared to be emigrants to Italy and not very friendly, some of the staff struggled with English. The Reception area doubled as a breakfast servery by placing food tables over existing furniture!!!.There are two separate, but small areas to eat your generous breakfast. The Hotel has a tiny lift plus stairs to each floor, WIFI Coverage was good in the room
There are good Restaurants with a couple minutes walk either side of the Hotel
Hotel Sonya is within walking distance to the Roma Termini railway station,So don't be tempted to take a Taxi to the Hotel as we were ripped off due to the one way street system adding to the fare.

In May 2013 we took our first trip to Europe and were going to spend our first 2 nights in Rome at the Hotel Sonya. We made our reservations in February via Orbitz and had confirmed reservations. When we arrived tired and jet lagged at the Hotel we were told they were overbooked and had arranged for us to stay at no extra cost at a hotel around the corner called the Star Hotel. It was a very nice hotel and when we checked in they confirmed that we would be charged no more than Sonya would cost. It was upon check out two days later that things went downhill. I had totally forgotten that back in February that using Orbitz I had already paid for the hotel on AMEX. So upon checkout the clerk asked for my VISA. I told him that I THOUGHT I had already paid for the hotel up front and it was to cost no more than Sonya. He said Orbitz does not collect up front and I had to pay and the 582 Euros was what Sonya would have cost. Still figuring out Euro to dollar conversions I figured that $426 versus 583 euro must be about right. So shame on me for being tired and confused.

When we got home I finally figured out that we had paid for the hotel twice, AMEX for $426 and VISA for $782. I immediately when through Orbitz to get it taken care of. They slowly got us in touch with Ivan at Sonya who after several weeks SAID he would refund us the difference. After several e-mails back and forth he tried to get a refund to us but the bank account number was wrong. After getting him the correct bank account number he stopped responding to our e-mails. VISA tells us that since we stayed at the Star Hotel we are stuck. I'm hoping I can at least get AMEX to get my $426 back.

So, word of warning for first time travelers: Know what you have done, be firm about it and realize that arguing with European merchants once home with the language and time barriers is difficult and frustrating. After getting ripped off a couple of other places I'm not so keen for future travel to the Med. It was a great trip spoiled by paying a net $550 a night for hotels the first two nights.

Traveler beware!
