“Handy Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We stayed two nights,The Bed comfort was good, The room was large enough for the 3 of us.
The bathroom was modern with a good shower. Our room was on the 3rd floor and backed onto a quiet courtyard. We were unable to find an English language channel on the TV set.
Most of the staff appeared to be emigrants to Italy and not very friendly, some of the staff struggled with English. The Reception area doubled as a breakfast servery by placing food tables over existing furniture!!!.There are two separate, but small areas to eat your generous breakfast. The Hotel has a tiny lift plus stairs to each floor, WIFI Coverage was good in the room
There are good Restaurants with a couple minutes walk either side of the Hotel
Hotel Sonya is within walking distance to the Roma Termini railway station,So don't be tempted to take a Taxi to the Hotel as we were ripped off due to the one way street system adding to the fare.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

In May 2013 we took our first trip to Europe and were going to spend our first 2 nights in Rome at the Hotel Sonya. We made our reservations in February via Orbitz and had confirmed reservations. When we arrived tired and jet lagged at the Hotel we were told they were overbooked and had arranged for us to stay at no extra cost at a hotel around the corner called the Star Hotel. It was a very nice hotel and when we checked in they confirmed that we would be charged no more than Sonya would cost. It was upon check out two days later that things went downhill. I had totally forgotten that back in February that using Orbitz I had already paid for the hotel on AMEX. So upon checkout the clerk asked for my VISA. I told him that I THOUGHT I had already paid for the hotel up front and it was to cost no more than Sonya. He said Orbitz does not collect up front and I had to pay and the 582 Euros was what Sonya would have cost. Still figuring out Euro to dollar conversions I figured that $426 versus 583 euro must be about right. So shame on me for being tired and confused.

When we got home I finally figured out that we had paid for the hotel twice, AMEX for $426 and VISA for $782. I immediately when through Orbitz to get it taken care of. They slowly got us in touch with Ivan at Sonya who after several weeks SAID he would refund us the difference. After several e-mails back and forth he tried to get a refund to us but the bank account number was wrong. After getting him the correct bank account number he stopped responding to our e-mails. VISA tells us that since we stayed at the Star Hotel we are stuck. I'm hoping I can at least get AMEX to get my $426 back.

So, word of warning for first time travelers: Know what you have done, be firm about it and realize that arguing with European merchants once home with the language and time barriers is difficult and frustrating. After getting ripped off a couple of other places I'm not so keen for future travel to the Med. It was a great trip spoiled by paying a net $550 a night for hotels the first two nights.

Traveler beware!

We visited Rome this August, when temperatures were 38-40C, so quite a test. The location is only 5 minutes from Termini station, right opposite the Opera Theatre, and in a quite side road. Our double room was excellent, with a large double bed, and a very good air conditioner! Very quite at night.

Facilities include free wifi, which worked very well in the room, mini bar and safe (operated by the room key card, which I hadn't seen before).

Breakfast was fine and the staff generally very helpful. The breakfast staff were not Italian nationals and so sometimes explanation was needed, but they seemed willing.

The Termini area is very convenient for visiting all the sites, as it is the main intersection of underground and bus routes. Buy a 6 Euro daily pass and just get on the metro and off at random - cheap and cool in hot weather. Getting out of the city also avoids the high tourist cost of drinks and meals - you can still get an 80 cent cup of coffee in Rome!

A lot of small restaurants in the immediate vicinity and, once again, a lot cheaper than the main areas.

Hotel Sonya had average facilities but an above average friendly staff who were always willing to help. The air conditioners didn't cool very well in the room but I guess Rome has only a few days in a year when that is a problem. Breakfast was excellent. The location was also great with easy access to subway, taxis and good places to eat. Overall, Hotel Sonya was a wonderful experience and good value for money

To begin, we booked a double room in Hotel Sonya, but when we arrived we were taken to Hotel Opera Roma which was basically two houses away from the main building and still easy to find and reach from Termini station. Nevertheless, we were very satisfied with our room which was very clean and, apart from the usual facilities (a bed, a bathroom, etc.), had an air conditioner (helped a lot considering it was at least +30° outside), a balcony (were really suprised to find out we had one), a mini-bar and even a small safe. The staff were knowledgeable and really helpful, provided us with a city map and explained how to get from the hotel to any other place on foot, by bus or by metro. To continue, breakfast was rich; we stayed here for three days, and each morning we could try something new. The apple-almond cake was particularly delicious.
To conclude, we were more than satisfied with our hotel choice. Not only the service was outstanding, the price was less than we initially expected, but also all the main sights were withing walking distance. If we ever come back to Rome (which is very likely to happen), we will definitely stay in this hotel again.

We booked into this Hotel using Booking.com and trusted the description given on their website. The Hotel is easy to find when arriving at Termini station in beautiful Rome and is very convenient for accessing the major sites and tour options. The Colosseum and The Roman Forum are just 10 minutes walk down Via Cavor, a road that runs beside Via Del Viminale. The description of this Hotel stated that a bar and mini bar were both available but upon arrival we were told that no bar existed and that each room had a mini bar only. This was very unsatisfactory as we like to relax after a long day's sight seeing. There are numerous good bars and restaurants in the area so this compensated somewhat. The room was adequate and came with air conditioning and a neat on suite shower room with all the necessary requirements. The breakfast was very poor and the service slow. Traditional Italian cakes and pastries were available for breakfast but were not very fresh. Their yoghurts were either frozen solid or lukewarm so no joy there. Coffee was ordered from a waiter but it came already in the cup and you had to ask hard for a refill. The staff were not eager to spend time answering questions and customer satisfaction was not a priority. We will probably look elsewhere for our next visit to Rome.

Room Tip: The Hotel has a lift to all floors. A front view room is the best option as you can look out at Rome...
