The Mariano is quite expensive for what you get. The hotel rooms are clean, and the bathrooms look like they've been recently refitted so are spotless and modern. The room wallpaper though is a bit hideous and the rooms are small. Good aircon though. The breakfast is towards the more minimal end of a continental breakfast, although you can still fill yourself up. There is a choice of cereals, some bread, jams etc, a "juice" machine, but that's about it. There isn't the usual choice of meats or cheeses. You can though ask the staff for any type of coffee freshly made.
The best part about the hotel is its location. Being just south of the main railway station, I was expecting a bit of a dodgy area. However, it is actually very pleasant, in the heart of Rome's China Town, with lots of clothes shops run by Chinese and genuine Chinese restaurants catering for locals at good prices (try the one right next to the hotel - don't be put off by the plastic tables and tableclothes). Diagonally opposite from the hotel across the crossroads is an excellent Korean basement restaurant - Hana, Piazza Manfredo Fanti 15. Get the inclusive dishes which come with an array of small dishes of pickled vegetables. With the train station being at the crossing point of the city's two metro lines and a major bus terminus you are ideally suited to travel the city.
