I have stayed in a lot of hotels and have never written a negative review before but this place was shocking to me. It was in a very seedy area, we saw drug deals and had unconscious people near our hotel. The area is the ghetto of Rome.

The room size was small but fine, the walls were covered with dirt, the bathroom roof and walls were covered with mould and the rooms stank. The service was unhelpful and the only assistance we got was being repeatedly told that we needed to leave our room cards at the hotel, due to the bad area surrounding the hotel.

We couldn't eat breakfast due to how dirty we found the hotel and the food was stale and both of the 2 options were inedible to us. After 3 star hotels in France, England, Greece and Spain, this hotel was nothing more than a backpacker hotel, and backpackers were the only other guests I saw stay here. The TV we had had no reception on the one English speaking channel. There was no little fridge (very difficult in such a hot place) and the safes in our room did not work, which was a concern considering the area the hotel is in. For a family I found this hotel totally inappropriate, it was dirty, smelly, and in a dangerous neighbourhood not near tourist attractions, and only good for those catching a train. The hotel was very noisy, and walking home at dusk was something we didn't try more than once with children, getting back early became a priority for safety.

There must be worst hotels, I just hope I never have to experience them, as this was the worst place I would ever hope to see.

We spent 5 nights here in mid March. The location is excellent, only two streets from Termini. The hotel is actually on Via Rattazzi, overlooking Piazza M. Fanti and was a little difficult to find last time we stayed there. The hotel address doesn't give a street name. Our room was on the first floor as requested,it is spacious by Rome/European standards and the bathroom is quite big. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Our only problem was that our shower base kept filling up with water and the hot water was often cold. Persistent gentle complaining eventually had the problem sorted.
For laundry and internet, there is a fantastic service called "OndaBlu" in Via Principe Amedeo two blocks towards Santa Maria Maggiore. Virginia is the lady in charge and she is the most delightful, helpful lady. The internet rates are pretty good too.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for three nights. It was close to the train and bus terminal. It was clean.

Good things: the AC worked great, and the hotel is on Piazza Manfredo Fanti, a little parklet surrounding an old cistern -- it was relatively quiet, even on the first floor facing the street, and there was a view of green, which is rare in this part of Rome. It's also on the south side of termini, relatively close to the otherwise very inconvenient track from which the train to the airport (the Leonardo Express) departs.

Bad things: the breakfast (more below), no internet access at any price, minimal amenities.

The room, booked as a double on booking.com, turned out to be a triple with a fourth folding bed conveniently at hand. The room had fabric-covered walls and tile floors. Amenities were minimal: there was no Kleenex, nevermind a kettle or coffee maker. The mattresses had little toggles (much like a futon), but they could only be felt on the half of the mattress not covered by the mattress pad. Pillows were flat, and the bedspread reminded me of the cheap polyester things seen in cheap US hotels. Despite this uninspired bedding, I slept very well. The room had a small safe. Rooms used chip-card keys which they asked to have left at reception when going out (= no real security for the room).

Breakfast included croissants, rolls, two varieties of (packaged, not fresh) juice, and cereal. The milk was reconstituted from powder, and there were no cheeses, cold cuts, eggs, or other protein. The spreads included an off-brand Nutella substitute.

Summary: I'd happily stay here again if I were taking the Leonardo Express train, but, given the breakfast and lack of net, I wouldn't choose it for more than a one night stay. And given the unreliability of the Leonardo Express, I'd rather stay elsewhere in Rome and pay the flat rate taxi fare of 40 Euro to get to the airport.

The Mariano Hotel is a three-star hotel near Termini Train Station. Perfect location for those arriving and departing by public transport. As others have described, the rooms are small, clean, and quiet and the bathroom relatively nice. Breakfast is basic, but fine. The desk staff ranged from incredibly helpful to not helpful at all. We booked through Venere.com and were quoted a price significantly less than on the hotel's own website. I was a bit worried about this, but there was no problem at check in or check out. There is a lovely historic building across the street with the added benefit of a small park. The area is of mixed ethnicities and, while not the most elegant in Rome, feels quite safe--even late in the evening. There are several historic sites near by and the Coliseum is easily walkable. As other reviewers have noted, all subways and many bus routes pass through Termini, so it is easy to move around the city and end up close to the hotel. An excellent budget choice.
