I stayed at the Hotel Valle in September 2007. Let’s get the negative stuff out of the way first. I booked through their website which offered a number of services that were not available: no bar, no room service and no safe in the room. If you’re after the services they advertise you may want to check with the hotel direct – especially if you need the babysitting.
And if you have a room that overlooks Via Cavour – be warned, it can be very noisy because of the amount of traffic throughout the day and night.
I wanted to do the negative stuff first because the lack of a bar is not really a concern. If you fancy a nightcap close to the hotel just pop into the Café Valeone (my preferred choice, really nice owner) or the Café de Brasil, both stay open till 11 o’clock (the Shamrock Pub, near the Forum, stays open till 2 am if you want to make a night of it).
The hotel was clean. My room was a fair size with an excellent bathroom. The staff was really helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast wasn’t bad either. Nice selection of cheese, meats and cereal.
For the price – the Hotel Valle can not be beat. The hotel’s location is excellent. Station Termini is a 10-15 min walk away – which is just not great for the trains, but also for the Terravision shuttle service to and from Campino airport.
The Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, The Collessium and Museo Capitalone are at the end of Via Cavour – a 10 minute walk away. The Panthelon, Spanish Steps, Arc de Augusta and Trevi Fountain can easily be reached on foot too. I walked to the Vatican from the hotel and that only took 25 leisurely minutes. And to be honest, you’ll miss out on a lot not walking.
If you do want to take the metro the Cavour stop is about 200 metres away. There is also a large post office 300 metres from the hotel (though you can buy stamps from most the tobacconist shops too).
