Booked into Virgilio for 6 nights in April 09.

Start worrying when you are asked to pay full amount up front...

Desk staff / managers couldn't care less about you or your hotel experience. Cleaners are very friendly and the sole member of staff (young girl from Romania) who is a gem and is run off her feet is at breakfast.

We stayed in 3 different rooms - reasons were: too busy / overbooked which was fine and we could handle, no water and I mean not even cold water in our second room, then finally to an adequate room.

All 3 rooms were filled with the smell of stale smoke when we turned on the air con. Not pleasant for non smokers (rooms were on second and third floors).

The lift breaks down daily, much to the distress of those stuck inside. I witnessed this on 6 consecutive days. Often follwed by much running round by staff and resolution anywhere between 5-30 minutes later.

If you are put on the third floor there are no stairs (except fire exit) and so you need to rely on the faulty lift. We were stranded on the third floor for periods up to 30 minutes waiting on the latest lift fiasco to be sorted out. This led us to miss breakfast once which is fine but on the last day we had to leave with our cases down the fire escape as we were at risk of missing our connection to the airport.

Breakfast area tiny - at weekend or when hotel gets busy expect to que for a breakfast table. Also, once seated, you will find that there are various items missing, ranging from cutlery/cups/glasses/and breakfast items. This is because a single person staffs the area and despite her best efforts cannot cope with the excessive demands upon her.

If on third floor be aware that there is only a limited amount of water in their water tank. If you get up late (i.e.930am) there is a very real chance of having no water at all. The miserable desk staff might get you another room in which to shower if not too much effort.

Awful, smelly, dirty, incompetent and unfriendly staff, malfunctioning lift, and hugely overpriced. Never again, and I strongly advise to try elsewhere

we got good rates for this hotel and picked it because it is centrally located. it is with a walking distance to many Rome attractions. the room is quite small, very small tv, but nice bathroom. Breakfast is quite boring (same things every morning), but they make their own capuccino. Our last 2 nights of staying were a bit annoying. We came back to the room after a long day and it wasn't eally neat. They hired a new chambermaid , and she broke the cover ot the toilet seat. Anyway, for a good price (less than 100 Euro per night), I would g for it again. Location is everything!

If you enjoy sleeping on a box-spring like mattress, and don't mind the appearence of mold in your unsanitary shower, than this is the place for you. Not nearly the value and comfort that a "three star" should offer, we stayed here for; thank goodness only one night. Our room was delayed in being ready on time, and the elevator stopped working later that evening, so we tried the stairs only to find they don't go up to the third floor, so we waited over 15 minutes to get the lift working. I've stayed in hostals better than this.

  • Liked — that we only booked one night.
  • Disliked — The coils of the mattress, and mold in the shower.

Nice little hotel in a good place. You can walk to the Collosseum from it and also its in quite a quiet area. Only problem we had was they put us in a grotty tiny room to start, with paper thin walls (we were kept awake half the night by people talking next door) but they said they would move us the next night. Our new room was lovely, much more like it!!
Would recommend!!

This hotel was located in a quiet street off the busy Via Natiozionale. The advantage of being so close to one of the main streets in Rome afforded convenient acccessibility to the bus routes and within walking distance of the metro at Piazza Republica. The location of the hotel also meant that you did not have to suffer any of the traffic noise that is usually experienced when situated directly onto a main road.
The hotel itself was small and intimate. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient and spoke excellent English. The rooms were typically small for a city centre hotel but exceptionally clean with daily maid service. There was a safe in the room, suprisingly enough, you did not have to pay for the use of the safe key.
My only criticism was the breakfast which consisted of rice crispies or cornflakes and milk, a bread roll with butter or preserve and a croissant. Drinks were juice, water, tea or coffee. This offering did not deviate for the 4 mornings we were there. Suffice to say after the second morning we made alternative arrangements in one of the many cafes surrounding the hotel.
Rome was everything I expected it to be and more. I found the `Romans` generally helpful and friendly - a real contrast to the residents of Milan.
Be prepared for an awful lot of walking - you will not see everything but if you plan for the sites you want to see and use the public transport system wisely - you will not be disappointed.
A word of advice - all the literature about Rome will advise you about pickpockets. Having visited various cities across Europe and America, I would regard myself as quite cautious and sensible about my belongings, but Rome was something else, the excessive amount of people using the buses and metro system provide the crafty pickpocket with ample opportunity to steal your belongings as my partner experienced on our second day into the visit. Upon reflection, the theives worked in pairs, were very well dressed and extremely good at what they do. Fortunately, they only got away with about 50 euros as we had placed everything of worth in our hotel safe.
Do not let this deter you from using what is otherwise a really efficient and quick way of getting around the city. The friendlieness of the other citizens of Rome restored my good opinion of the city and its residents.
To experience a real Roman trattatoria, visit the Est Est Est across the road from the hotel. The Pizzas are to die for and the service was second to none.
Finally, I would advise you to use the audio guides wherever possible as there is such a lot of information for the tourist to take in - audio guides are relatively inexpensive but main attractions such as the Collesseum, Roman Forum and Vatican Museum require you to provide identification i.e. passport, ID card, or a credit card. My advice would be for you to take something that you can use as ID but not of any real value.
Useful tip - we purchased a 7 day pass which allowed us access on all public transport - cost 14 euro per person, this pass proved to be a pair of feets best friend.
