My husband and I stayed at Hotel Selene on the last day of our trip to Italy. We chose to spend our last night there because it was close to Termini and we needed to catch an early flight the next morning.

While the hotel is close to the train station, we found a lot things lacking. Here were the main issues we encountered:
- The TV did not work
- There was a rather large hole in the ceiling close to the overhead light fixture
- The bedspread was stained
- The shower drain clogged - we had water up to our calves as we were taking showers

I do want to mention that the staff was pleasant and we had no issues with our reservation.

We were not able to try the breakfast becasuse we had to leave for the airport very early.

Based on the issues we had, I would not recommed this hotel, with so many others in Rome to choose from,

  • Liked — Close to Termini Station
  • Disliked — Status of room - TV did not work, hole in ceiling, dirty linens, shower clogged

We paid 135 Euros a night for a double room. The room was modern and nicely furnished. It had a bathroom with a shower which was nice, and had a hairdryer. The room had a TV (with CNN and Eurosports for English speakers), mini fridge and a safe. The bed was comfortable and the furniture nice.

The location of the hotel is great. Only a five minute walk from the train station. We walked to all of the sights (about 10 min walk to Trevi fountain, 15 to Colosseum, 30 mins to vatican). The walks in Rome all seem quite short as there is so much to see on the way to anything!

The breakfast was nice. A European breakfast with bread, pastries, crereal, boiled eggs, ham, cheese, fruit, yogurt.

Couldn't fault the hotel and would stay here again.

We selected the Selene for its closeness to Termini transport connections and its reasonable rates. After reading reviews wasnt quite sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the overall standard.

Initially finding the hotel wasn't too easy as we arrived at night as there is no neon sign, but its only a 5-10 min walk from Termini one block before the Opera House - on the opposite side of the road. As noted in previous reviews, the reception is actually next door to the hotel entrance but that wasnt a problem - it is a proper reception desk, and staffed 24 hours. The staff we met were always very welcoming and helpful. If you dont want to go too far in the evening there are nearby bars and restaurants.

The hotel itself is on the 3rd floor, via a lift and secure door - there are steps to the lift which may be a problem if infirm, however there is a helpful and polite porter on hand to help with bags and show you how the doors work. We had a twin room at the front of the hotel and the furnishings were old but clean. The room was quite large with adequate wardrobe space, the beds were comfortable and the walls were sound-proofed ensuring it was quiet. There was a tv and free safe in the room. The bathroom was good size and very clean.

Breakfast area was basic but again very clean and a plentiful buffet of cereals, juices, yoghurts, meats, cheese, rolls, pastries etc. Hot drinks are brought to order. Have to say the regular coffee was pretty bad, but the cappuccino and tea were fine and the hot chocolates served at another table looked very tempting. We had a early flight on our last day and the reception staff offered to organise a packed breakfast bag for us to take with us - croissants, juice, yoghurt ect - which kept us going after an early start.

We got a special winter offer rate - offers are on their website - and werent expecting too much but it was very good value for money and a decent standard of room in a very convenient location. Will certainly consider the Selene again when returning to Rome.

This hotel is exactly what I expected of a hotel in Rome.
Not the most stylish but met all our needs perfectly. It's in a great location just down from Termini station and also just off Via di Nationale which is a lovely street to walk and have bit to eat.
The reception area is funny as it's not in the hotel and I didn't find the reception staff too friendly. The porter who took our bags up was very nice. The room was a good size, very clean, small bathroom but a good shower. The bed linen was changed every day and fresh towels left in every day also.
The breakfast was good, you got a buffet that met all needs from coffee/tea to toast to cereal to fruit and yoghurt.
The lay out of the hotel is a bit funny you enter off the street and climb about 2 x 5 steps up to the lift. You go up 3 stories and you come to a door that looks like a fire escape, you need your room card to get inside this door. Then you walk through the dining room to get to the bedrooms which I thought a little odd but the building had 3 hotels in it so hence the 3rd floor was hotel selene.
For the price and location I would recommend it and would definetly go back again

We stayed at the Hotel Selene twice, once in late September and again in mid October after booking this hotel through Venere.com. The hotel is located 2-3 blocks from the Termini station and is convenient if travelers need bus, subway, or train service. The area surrounding this hotel is quite run-down looking, but does have a few small cafes within walking distance. The entrance to the hotel can pose a problem for travelers who have difficulty climbing stairs as there are 2 small flight of stairs to climb to reach the elevator to any of the floors. The "reception area" is not in the hotel itself but is a small room (12' X12') next door. There is 24/7 service at the desk but early one morning we found that the metal door was closed when we went to ask a question. A few minutes later, the door was opened and the person on duty said he had to run out to do something. We doubt that he was gone very long, but when hotels advertise 24/7 front desks, an absence like this could be problematic. Rooms were clean although our first one was much older looking than the second. Either the hotel is renovating some rooms or we were just luckier the second time.
There are hairdryers in each room but little else. Soap for the shower and sink is provided through a wall-mounted dispenser. There was also a shower cap, but no kleenex or shampoo. For the 155 euro we paid per night, we expected more. Breakfast was adequate and included cold cereals, fruit cocktail, yogurt, ham, cheese, cornetti, plain bread, OJ, coffee, and tea. Internet service is available in the reception area for a minimum fee of 5 euro for 30 minutes. The staff was helpful, with the exception of one young woman who entered 4 am instead of 6:30 am into the computer for our final wake-up call. We felt that she was annoyed that we had asked numerous questions about getting a cab, and splitting our final bill. And, regarding the bill, since we were two friends travelling together, we asked to split the bill in half and have it applied to our own individual credit cards. That was totally impossible according to this same woman - only one charge per room. No way, can't do! We would not recommend this hotel to anyone wishing more comfortable and pleasant surroundings. The neighborhood is somewhat seedy with unused buildings nearby and little of interest in the immediate area.
