We stayed at the Hotel Selene twice, once in late September and again in mid October after booking this hotel through Venere.com. The hotel is located 2-3 blocks from the Termini station and is convenient if travelers need bus, subway, or train service. The area surrounding this hotel is quite run-down looking, but does have a few small cafes within walking distance. The entrance to the hotel can pose a problem for travelers who have difficulty climbing stairs as there are 2 small flight of stairs to climb to reach the elevator to any of the floors. The "reception area" is not in the hotel itself but is a small room (12' X12') next door. There is 24/7 service at the desk but early one morning we found that the metal door was closed when we went to ask a question. A few minutes later, the door was opened and the person on duty said he had to run out to do something. We doubt that he was gone very long, but when hotels advertise 24/7 front desks, an absence like this could be problematic. Rooms were clean although our first one was much older looking than the second. Either the hotel is renovating some rooms or we were just luckier the second time.
There are hairdryers in each room but little else. Soap for the shower and sink is provided through a wall-mounted dispenser. There was also a shower cap, but no kleenex or shampoo. For the 155 euro we paid per night, we expected more. Breakfast was adequate and included cold cereals, fruit cocktail, yogurt, ham, cheese, cornetti, plain bread, OJ, coffee, and tea. Internet service is available in the reception area for a minimum fee of 5 euro for 30 minutes. The staff was helpful, with the exception of one young woman who entered 4 am instead of 6:30 am into the computer for our final wake-up call. We felt that she was annoyed that we had asked numerous questions about getting a cab, and splitting our final bill. And, regarding the bill, since we were two friends travelling together, we asked to split the bill in half and have it applied to our own individual credit cards. That was totally impossible according to this same woman - only one charge per room. No way, can't do! We would not recommend this hotel to anyone wishing more comfortable and pleasant surroundings. The neighborhood is somewhat seedy with unused buildings nearby and little of interest in the immediate area.
