We originally booked an apartment for a week in Rome and were very disappointed to find on arrival that it was depressing and dirty and very unlike the write-up on the web. Unable to bear more than a night at the apartment we decamped to The Pantheon Hotel.
We had Room 101 at 200 euros a night and found it to be very small and dark, rather miserably decorated in hues of brown and yellow and with a well-worn carpet. It was, though, extremely clean. The bathroom was large by comparison and had a great shower.
The hotel staff were courteous and helpful at all times, and the breakfast was nice.
The hotel is absolutely ideally situated for walking to almost all the historical sites and museums.
Our main problem was the almost unrelenting noise - the room is on the first floor overlooking the street where there are several restaurants, shops, etc. The noise of people talking, laughing and shouting was constant and went on well into the night and on two occasions until 4 in the morning. When we did finally get to sleep the noise would start again with the refuse collection and street cleaning vehicles roaring slowly up and down, and the staff in the restaurants dragging chairs and tables around endlessly. The building is in a very narrow street and with tall buildings on either side, so the noise is contained.
However, even though it was impossible to have the window open because of the noise, the air-conditioning was very efficient.
I am not saying the Pantheon is not a good hotel in many ways - but do avoid room 101 or any on the first floor overlooking the street if you value some peace!
