I went to Rome, for a family vacation and to educate my 11 and 13 year old about Rome's culture and civilization. What a wonderful city! Hotel Bolivar charged higher prices and the pics looked nice on the website rome-hotels.it, so I booked it for 870 Euros, for 3 nights, for a "quad" room.
Filthy room, bed spreads need upgrading big time. Shower hoses leaked all directions, but were manageble, but then the tub you stand in to shower, leaks the drain water all over the floor from underneath the tub. what a disappointment when we arrived there to see the ceiling falling apart above the bar, and dirty walls leading to the WC, and the room was darkand dingy, and could only be considered a place to crash out....the AC (air conditioning) was intermittent, and it was quite warm until the night time, uncontrollable as far a temp goes, and the duct outlets were covered with green mold.
Peter at the front desk asked me to write a review and give Bolivar all "5's" and stood over me as I typed. That was a little intimidating, and the last thing I wanted to do with our time in Rome. He was going to reward me with an hours worth of internet use, a value of 2 Euros. Then he changed it to a half hour.....what a joke. In the end he didn't extend my use of internet at all, and I deleted the post.
I had an over all feeling of opression there, although Peter did offer us a cappachino on arrival, after I asked for one. Soda cost 5 Euros a can, refridges in room poured heat out into the room and hardly put a chill on anything = inop. as far as I was concerend.
Bright spot was the breakfast room, which was well lighted due to all the windows there on the top floor. the breakfasst itself eas OK, they only had one over-worked staff member, who tried very hard to keep up. The last morning the coffee was instant type, undrinkable, other guest couldn't drink it either. No fruit the last morning either. Eggs ran out as soon as she put them out. No problem for me, but again, not worth the money.
Room was a 3 bed room with a cot, this is what a "quad" room was. Could barely turn around, we had to change rooms due to the first one being on ground level with a view of the grafittied alley, no light. Went to 2nd floor for next room, more cramped, but at least we could see out the window and had some daylight.
Walls dirty in room, but nice painted frescoes on the ceiling. No beds like the ones pictured on the website....all shoved together twins for the double bed, a cot and another twin against the filthy wall.
I went to the Hiberia Hotel around the corner, after the 3 nights at Bolivar....what a difference! Great unifirmed staff, excellent breakfast...top notch (really good), rooms very clean and what a view we got on the 4th floor! Guisseppe was the manager and gave me internet for free. We walked in off the street and asked for a rate, and accepted it ....200 Euros for a quad room, VERY nice bathroom. Wish I had spent the entire vacation in Rome at the Hiberia hotel.
Location of both Hotels is fine, we walked every where, except the Vatican, 'cause we wanted to get an early start there. Waked back though, and thoroughly enjoyed all the neigborhoods, felt safe always, even with the family in tow.
If you're thinking of a "Roman Holiday"....do it....it was wonderful. Just don't stay in the Bolivar, or pay a lot extra for a hotel on-line, and expect it to be in better shape than others for less. Oh yea, call the hotel directly, and see if they have a room, websites don't always have the rooms to sell. ...especially for a "quad room".
Moderately priced, I recommend the Hiberia hotel. I wouldn't recommend the Bolivar to anyone.
