The positives.

It is conveniently located. It does not get better for visiting Vatican sites. We walk a lot (because we like it) and never took metro to get anywhere in the center of Rome including the colliseum, but the metro is one or two blocks away.

The rooms are very nicely remodeled. Marble and granite everywhere, stylish and modern bathroom fixtures. It's probably recent too.

The front desk staff is friendly and most speak enough English to explain everything you need.

The breakfast choices are limited, but the espresso made on request is absolutely perfect. We tipped those guys every day, and we are not people who would tip anyone.

There's cheap wifi access sold by the front desk.

The negatives.

Even though I gave 4 stars all around, the issues reported by the traveler from Hong Kong all exist.

It is a requirement that even a one star hotel must provide a towel per person per day. The age and quality of towels is nowhere near the quality of the room interior. Someone should tell the made for sure.

The shower pan is clean, but it does not drain too well (the water pressure is something you don't see in US, so it's a lot to drain).

Do whatever you can to get an inside view room. There's a small pizzeria right below frequented by crowds of locals 10 pm to midnight. When they close, there is a lot of noise dragging things around.

This hotel sits between the Ottoviano/St Peters Metro station and the Vatican, 2 minute walk from each, making it the perfect location for seeing the whole of Rome. Opposite St Peter's square there is a line of bus stops for all the sight seeing buses which we found a great way of getting around.
The hotel is basic and amenities are limited, but our room was a good size and clean. Tips:
We had a room overlooking Via Ottoviano, and were able to spend time watch the hoards of people go by under our window.
Do the full bus tour first to get an idea of where everything is then use the Hop on/off arrangement to get to everywhere.
We were also lucky enough to wonder down to St Peters around 4pm after our arrival and got into St Peters Basilica without any queuing at all.
Use the little yellow man on Google maps to "Drop onto and look round" the junction of Via Ottoviano and Gremanica and you will see the entrance to the hotel to the left of the Castroni caffe, otherwise it is v difficult to find.

We stayed for three nights at the Hotel Amalia and were very satisfied. The location is great, a short walk to the Vatican and only 2 minutes walk to the Ottaviano metro station. Room and bathroom were very modern and clean, TV had a good choice of channels, air con was very effective and reception staff were friendly and helpful.
Agreed that the breakfast was not fantastic but it is edible and considering the price of the rooms is sufficient. A good value hotel in a good location.

Cleaniness was terrible - breakfast table cloth not replaced until blotched. Minimal breakfast choices (at least amongst the 6 hotels in other cities we stayed on similar rate). Used towels and beddings were not replaced - replacements on request were torn. Dirty and blocked bath tub to the extent of flooding. No refill of soap and shampoo. Morning call request was unattended to. Hotel in midst of an old building block.

Just come back from a City Break in Rome and was very pleased with our hotel. The Rooms were spotless, and very spacious. The air conditioning was really good (much needed in Rome in August) Didnt have a view of the Vatican which we hoped for but had a view of the street looking down to the Vatican so wasnt too bad. The breakfast on the other hand wasnt brilliant. There were bread rolls that were not very nice, very sugary coissants and cakes, continental hard toast with different jams/cheese etc. Had different cereals but the milk was warm, so each morning I ended up with a coffee and a fruit juice, was dissapointed after visiting Venice the previous year and they had different fruits/meats etc. My only other criticism was that we had the same towels the whole time we were there (5 days) but im sure if we had asked they would have changed them. The best thing about the Amalia was the location. Was a 2 minute walk from The Vatican and was only a 20 minute walk into the centre of Rome. Overall this hotel was more than adequate for us. Spacious adequate rooms, great location, couldnt ask for more for what we paid. Would definatly recommend!
