Just back from 3 nights at the Amalia which my daughter, with help from my wife, booked for my 70th birthday. What a wonderful experience. Must concur with the majority of people about the hotel. Large, comfortable room(405), marble floor, huge bed and spotlessly clean. Lovely bathroom apart from a very small shower cubicle. Different breakfast by usual British standards but it's different in Austria, France, Switzerland, Germany etc too........so, this is Italy! There was loads to eat and drink so no complaints at all. Staff, what we saw of them, were very pleasant and efficient; always someone at reception. Briefly saw room 401 as we passed when it was being serviced. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! Tiny and overlooking courtyard. Restaurant next to hotel pretty good but best is left out of hotel then left at the deli, left at next block and over on the right; Isola della pizza (I think). Book on a Saturday night (or you'll have a long wait in the queue to get in) and you will be amazed at the atmosphere. Couldn't buy it! Photos of the rich and famous (Boccelli, Totti) clientele all over the walls. Food superb particularly the anti pasti, 11 separate dishes, yes 11! Not cheapest but definitely good. Briefly back to the hotel.
Can be a bit noisy in the small hours with the inevitable car horns and of course the recycling bins have to be emptied at about 3am! All in all, very satisfied.

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel based on the good reviews, and we were not disappointed at all. The Amalia is a great hotel. We stayed there for four nights in hot and sunny August. It's in a perfect location, just a few minutes walk from the Underground line A, which leaves from Termini railway station (which is where you end up when you come from the aiport and take the Leonard Express train into Rome). It's in a very nice area of Rome, only a few minutes walk to the Vatican museums. When we got there in the morning our rooms weren't ready but we could store our luggage in a safe place. We got a Superior Room, on the top floor, with a good view to the dome of St. Peter. The room was quiet, there was a very good air conditioning system (you need to pay that extra, but it's worth it in summer) and it was spotlessly clean - I liked the fact that the floors were stone, and not carpet, it's a lot cleaner!
We loved the old-fashioned lift; we loved the breakfast buffet, which gave us everything we needed, although it is a bit on the sweet side and there's no cheese or ham or fruits, but croissants, bread, sweet, dry cakes and cereals - and one of the best coffees I've ever had.
The staff were always very friendly, they even helped us when we had a request for a booking of a special sight-seeing. They speak English fluently, too.
All in all: don't look for another hotel, go to the Amalia, it's a great experience!
And, there's a nice restaurant just round the block (out of the hotel, to the left, then left again and it's on the right side of the road), called the Isola della Pizza, which was a great find: good food, not too expensive, wonderful antipasti misti and just lovely sizzling meats.

Stayed for 3 nights on a b & b basis. the hotel is clean, comfortable and absoultely in a fabulous location for seeing all the best attractions in Rome.
On arrival we were warmly greeted and shown to our room. We did upgrade to a room with a "view of the vatican" !. room 504 may have slightly better view.
Our room was very clean, comfortable with a very good hot shower.
Standard rooms looked decent. just a little smaller than the superior rooms.
Breakfast was of the continental type, adequate buffet style including tea/coffee, help yourself to as much as you want.
We found all the staff helpful and friendly, especially Maria on reception who was more than happy to give us tourist tips.
We had a taxi from Ciampino airport to the hotel it was 47 euros, there is a bus from the airport to centre of rome for just 6 euros they run about every 30 minutes.
We did most of our touring on foot, the vatican being just 5 minutes walk away, most other sites are within walking distance.
You can purchase a day pass for the metro and local buses they are just 4 euros.
We visited the vatican musuems (sistena chapel etc), that was 14 euros and well worth the money, we spent half a day enthralled by the whole experience, there is a portable guide available to hire they are 6 euros they are really useful.
Visited the Callisto catacombs the cost was 6 euros it does take up half a day though.
One of the best meals we had was in a chinese restuarant called Ni Hao on angolo Piazza just by the vatican city wall well worth the money. There is also a decent Irish bar called The Black duke near the Pantheon that serves good food and beer.
There is so much to do and see in Rome it is fabulous, go there and explore it for yourself, enjoy

I stayed a week in the Amalia early in October of 2007 with my girlfiend... the location was great. We are very pedestrian / mass transit type people, and the location could not have fit us better. We arrived in Rome from Venice by train, and easily connected from Termini to the subway system, and the hotel is just blocks from one of the stops.

It is close enough to walk to downtown Rome, and easily steps from the Vatican.

The room was HUGE (in comparison to our rooms in Trieste, Venice, and London). The shower was probably the smallest of any of those places, but the room itself was massive!
Breakfasts were filling, and worked well for a day of exploring in Rome.

Nothing was overly fancy, but it worked, it was well located, and I would not hesitate to stay again at the Amalia.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Amalia for about 10 days for our honeymoon and loved it!! We initially chose it due to the proximity to Vatican City/St. Peter's Basilica, and we were so pleased when we got there! Price is reasonable for the size of the room and the location of the hotel. Numerous restaurants within walking distance, metro stop only 2 blocks away. Hotel has guest leave the key to the room at the desk while site-seeing, and housekeeping service was always very prompt, with fresh towels, clean sheets and a clean room. Leonardo was always very friendly and helpful at the front desk, as well as the other staff, whose names we can't remember. Breakfast selections were always very good. They even arranged for a car to pick us up/take us to Fuimicino Airport. It may not be a 5-star hotel, but you do get 5-star treatment!!
