My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Amalia for about 10 days for our honeymoon and loved it!! We initially chose it due to the proximity to Vatican City/St. Peter's Basilica, and we were so pleased when we got there! Price is reasonable for the size of the room and the location of the hotel. Numerous restaurants within walking distance, metro stop only 2 blocks away. Hotel has guest leave the key to the room at the desk while site-seeing, and housekeeping service was always very prompt, with fresh towels, clean sheets and a clean room. Leonardo was always very friendly and helpful at the front desk, as well as the other staff, whose names we can't remember. Breakfast selections were always very good. They even arranged for a car to pick us up/take us to Fuimicino Airport. It may not be a 5-star hotel, but you do get 5-star treatment!!

We stayed at the Amalia Hotel for four nights on April 17th. Excellent staff and location. Room was very large and nice marble flooring. Bathroom was huge! We were on the 5th floor near the back so it was very nice and quiet. The staff were amazing and only a 10 minute walk to the Vatican. It was so nice to walk back to the hotel at night from the center of Rome - maybe 1/2 hour and felt safe the entire time at night. Would definitely stay here again. Plus great shopping in the area!

We went open minded after reading the mixed reviews. The hotel is in an excellant location 5 mins to Vatican and 2 mins to nearest metro.
The room we had was very clean with large with ample space and wardrobes. The bathroom was also large but the shower cubicle was small but you could still shower easily. We found the hotel very quiet and the staff very approachable.
The staff recommend a restaraunt the next street up but there are very good and cheap eateries in the local area. We tended to select the ones populated by priests and the trainees from the police training centre and we never had a poor meal.
Rome itself seemed dirty and smelly and we went in Feb, don't know what it would be like in the stale,hot summer months

You cannot fault the location of the Amalia. It's just a few minutes walk to the Vatican, plenty of local shops and restaurants (as used by Italians) plus a short walk to the Metro which can then easily get you to all the other main sites including the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Colloseum, etc.

The room we had was small but if you are only using it as a base for sight seeing on a short break then what else do you need. It was clean and had everything we needed (apart from some extra pillows and to be fair we did not ask for more).

The reception staff were also helpful and breakfasts were reasonable for continental style.
