Our room was nice and spacious (it even had a small lobby) although not particularly stylish, there was little else than the walls. The bed was comfortable, clean and of a good size; the bathroom was spotless and some toiletries were provided. A word of advice: be careful when you book through a travel portal because the Hotel Dei Consoli has two venues: the hotel itself and an annex, which is in another building about 200 meters away. The hotel website clearly tells you where you are booking but it’s not always the case in some hotel booking portals so just double check. The rooms in the annex are cheaper; that’s where we stayed and we definitely recommend it because the room itself would be of a four-star standard at a very good price for Rome. As a matter of fact, the only thing in the annex that put us off was the shabby staircase and the lift, which we weren’t brave enough to use. Never mind: as soon as you get to the corridor where the rooms are, everything will change and you won’t be disappointed. With regard to location, the hotel is in a very nice neighbourhood close to the Vatican City (a 10-min walk), with plenty of shops and restaurants. However, it’s not really in the heart of Rome: assume a 40-min walk to Piazza di Spagna (the best is to take the metro). Be aware that the hotel is not “intra muros”, so the flat fee for a taxi ride from the airport does not apply and you will be charged according to the meter (about 50€ from Ciampino). When it comes to restaurants, Rome is not that expensive if you go a little bit off the beaten track and, most of all, if you avoid restaurants geared for tourists which serve frozen pizza. Ask a local for advice, any passer-by will be glad to help you. All in all, I definitely recommend Hotel Dei Consoli.

Many thanks to all staff at Hotel Dei Consoli. Myself and my partner had a really lovely time here in Rome. We had looked up numerous hotels prior to visiting and we were very happy with our stay here. Dei consoli is only a 5 minute walk from the vatican, and it is in the middle of a good shopping street. Very central loacation, train station only a 5 minute walk away, can get anywhere very quickly from this hotel. We walked pretty much everywhere, except when we were doing the colloseum...hopped on train...very easy to find. Very central loaction. The hotel was quiet at night. Rooms were small and compact, but most hotels are like this in Rome, and we spent a lot of the time out travelling the sights! Lovely bed, great shower, room was cleaned every day. Breakfast included, a little bit of everything, coffee wasnt too good however...but this was the consensus throughout all of Rome! The hotel staff were so helpful and lovely, could ask them anything. I would definately recommend this hotel to family and friends, and should I get the chance to visit Rome again I will not have to spend much of my time looking up where to stay as I shall be booking in again with Dei Consoli! Wouldn't recommend the dinner in the hotel, but breakfast is nice.

We stayed at the hotel for three nights . Small rooms but more than adequate and very clean ! Hotel close to Vatican and open top bus service . The concierge was very helpful ! Would recommend to anyone going to Rome !!!

Our stay was incredible all-round. The staff was very friendly (especially the hilarious desk clerk who greeted us -- sorry I cannot recall his name). The room was very nice, with free wi-fi, and very clean. The breakfast (included) was wonderful, with a mixture of hot (bacon and scrambled eggs) and cold (cold cuts, cheese, cereal, breads etc) and juice and coffee.

The hotel had a roof-top bar and restaurant, from which we could see the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. The hotel was a short walk from Vatican City and Vatican Museum, and nearby streets had ample high-end and mid-range shopping options. Nice restaurants, cafes and pizza snack bars were within walking distance.

The hotel is a fair distance (a 15-euro cab ride) from the Forum, but my wife and I walked there. It took about three hours, during which we passed the Spanish Steps and walked among the ruins and the Coliseum. (We took a taxi back to the hotel.)

The staff was friendly and they were incredibly efficient at cleaning the room. I see some others complain about lack of hot water, but that was not an issue for us. Also, there were three channels -- CNN, BBC and National Geographic? -- of English television.

On the downside, there did appear to be some street bums sleeping outside nearby buildings, but they did not bother us as we were entering or leaving the hotel.

I will stay at the hotel if I visit Rome again. It was well worth the money. I felt I got great value.
