My wife and I spent six nights at the Massimo D’Azeglio and were pleased with our accommodations. First a caveat: We treat our hotel as sleeping quarters only, so we always arrive without expectations to connect to the Internet, get a massage, go to the gym, etc. As a bedroom, this hotel provided everything it needed to: a large, firm bed, a clean bathroom, and an in-room safe. Our room was much larger than we had expected; it had high ceilings and beautiful parquet floors. It was ready as soon as we arrived, four hours prior to the official check-in time. This is always a convenience when you’re jetlagged and bleary-eyed following a transatlantic flight.
The hotel’s location is perfect if you’re willing to take public transportation. You’re less than two blocks from Termini station, which gives you access to busses, trains, trams, and the subway. If you prefer walking, note that this hotel’s location is a little removed from the city’s main sights: You can reach the Colosseum on foot in about 15 minutes; the Roman Forum in about 20; and Piazza Venezia in about 25.
Breakfast was included in our rate. It was a simple spread: breads, croissants and assorted pastries, cheeses, yogurt, cereal, fruit, scrambled eggs, and breakfast meats; more than enough food to start the day. The best part of breakfast was the coffee machine, which grinds fresh beans into your choice of beverages: espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and more.
The staff was friendly, but didn’t bend over backwards for us. For example, we asked them to confirm the time of our return flight and their first response was: “Yes, it’s tomorrow.” We also had a problem with the temperature in our room. I’m not convinced that we were able to control it. One night, our thermostat read 28C. We tried to lower the heat by pushing the “-“ symbol. We woke up at 3AM to find the thermostat at 29.5C. The room did not have instructions on how to call the front desk, so I had to go down to the lobby. Someone from the hotel came back to the room with me, tapped the thermostat a few times, told me to open the window, and assured me that everything would be OK. We weren’t exactly thrilled to sleep with the window open because (1) there was no screen; (2) it was raining; and (3) we were in the city center with car horns and constant traffic flow at all hours of the night.
We used Priceline.com and “named our own price,” which translated into a wonderfully low rate. At a similarly discounted rate, I would certainly return to this hotel.
