“Very Nice Property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2005

This was a very nice property with excellent service, a very good breakfast, many room amenities - such as tea making, large bathroom, nicely decorated, etc. However, I had requested a room in the back on the quiet side when I made reservations 5-6 months before arriving and even though there are many rooms I was given one on the noisy street.

“Rome in November”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2005

The hotel is very clean and comfortable. The rooms are on the small side but they are adequate. The breakfast is only ok as he range of foods on offer is limited. The hotel is 15 mins from the Forum and Colesseum but is a long walk from the Spanish Steps/Trevi. You can get the metro to these if you want as the Termini station is only 5 mins walk from Hotel. The area around the hotel is fine as its well lit and there always plenty of peopel around.
Overall the hotel is good but if you could find a hotel closer to the centre for similar money then with hindsight I would go with the latter.

“Comfortable Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2005

Have just returned from Rome and having used Tripadvisor to pick our hotel we were not disappointed. Its probably on the limit from the main attactions but it only took about 20 minutes to walk to the Forum and Colosseum area and it was fine to walk back as well. Although the area is a little bit rough we had no problems and to be honest it was no worse that some of the more up market areas - the begging was far worse nearer to St Peters. Our room ( for three) was not huge but plenty big enough and very comfortable, breakfast was fine with great views from the roof terrace. The room was always very clean and had plenty of fluffy white towels and of course the slippers! I would avoid the coach trips pushed by the hotel - we went on one and it was pretty hopeless although we had to admire the guide's ability to swap between 5 languages. The tour was supposed to be in English and the guide was obviously very knowledgeable but having 5 different languages to deal with meant that he did not give us much information. We opted out after a while. The staff at reception spoke excellent English and were always helpful. We prebooked our taxi from and to the airport- I have no idea how the price compares with one booked by the hotel- but it was an excellent service and I recommend them - check out ----. The hotel is very near the train station so no problem if you wanted to use public transport. We used the metro and bus to get to St Peters and the Spanish steps. Very cheap but very crowded. For both St Peters and Spanish steps you need to walk to Republica.
There are plenty of places nearby to eat in the evening.
Its well worth looking in Santa Maria Maggiore.

“Superb choice, highly recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2005

Hello,

Just stayed at this hotel for three days in October. We were upgraded to a superior room looking out at the Santa Maria church - lucky for us. This had advantage of balcony - not that we used it other than for a photo opportunity. Room was excellent - a bit heavy on the chintz bedspread! But really high quality furnishings. Bed was a bit hard, but overall, I have no complaints about the hotel.

TV in room with mainly foreign channels - BBC world & odd English programme on foreign MTV channel. If you sad like me & like TV, it is worth considering taking a portable DVD player for those moments when you are not eating / sight seeing.

Lovely breakfast on roof terrace - fantastic viewing area.

Weather was lovely! About 75 to 80 degrees farenheit at hottest point. But cooler at night - long sleeves weather. Not sure if this is representative though. We took an umbrella each, but did not need it.

I do understand what people meant by the area now - the termini area is a bit rough. But the hotel is well out of this. It is very convenient if you are getting dropped off by Terravision. Do not worry about the location it is ideal for sights & seemed safe enough, except for the lunatics on mopeds - they do not know what a stop sign means. You take your life in your hands everytime you cross the road in Rome!

The hotel is near a tube if you are feeling lazy. We caught the tube to the Vatican as it seemed a bit far & with all the walking you do when you get there. I would recomment very comfortable shoes!! I cannot emphasis this highly enough. The Santa Maria church is lovely & right infront of the hotel.

Good choice of restaurants in nearby vicinity - mainly pizza & pasta (but then you are in Italy!).

Sights of Rome were awesome. Loved them all. We were told to get to the Vatican museum early, which we did (9am) & queue was still heaving. I have never seen a queue like it (around 1/2 mile & five+ people deep) - no joke. So we went into St. Peters for 1 hour or so & after this, the queue to Vatican museum had vanished! Beware people offering to get you in with no queue for 40 or so euros, as the queue disappears later (it is only 12 euros to get in).

Personally I found the colleseum disappointing inside & expensive considering (10 euros each), but I heard other people loved it & said it was the highlight - so maybe you should ignore me. Have a look in a guidebook at a picture of what is inside - if this appeals to you go in, if not save your money - I thought it was much more impressive on the outside.

We had no incidents of theft during our visit, but personal security is of upmost importance in Rome, as I have heard loads of bad reports about this sort of thing.

In summary, great hotel - it deserves to be in trip advisor top twenty hotels in Rome & I think is an ideal choice for a stay. Hotel is a four star & I would not argue with this. Superb location & fantastic sight seeing.

Hope this helps.

Ps. Incidentally we were looking for a supermarket & had trouble finding one - they don't seem very common in Rome for some unknown reason - perhaps we were oblivious to them! Anyway, there is one on the opposite side of the road next to the department store (down some stairs) - obvious really.

“Beware of the Taxis!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2005

I have just returned from the Golden Mecenate Palace hotel in Rome where i stayed for four nights with my boyfriend. I was iniatially worried as i had seen a few bad reviews and i was just anxious to get what i paid for. I needent have worried, the hotel was fab. Our room was at the front of the hotel which faced out to the magnificent Maria Magigorie church. We found the hotel was situated well as we were travelling every day to different sites. The train station(Termini)was about 5 minutes away which we found great, travelled by metro mostly everywhere which is easy to use and v.cheap. Didnt have many dealing with the front desk at the hotel but we found they seemed to push taxis on us an awfull lot when all we wanted was info on trains or metro. Better off heading to the Termini and getting info and maps on destinations around the city and transport to airports.(alot cheaper)Had alot of problems with taxi drivers ripping us off by taking the scenic route everywhere.
The Housekeeping and breakfast staff were unbelievably helpfull and will go to the ends of the earth to please you and make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
I would definatly recommend to stay in this hotel to anybody and will probably return to stay in the furure.
