The Amalfi is a clean hotel with a nice staff. The room we had, 421, was small but very clean. It was on the top floor and faced Via Merulana. When we opened the windows and looked left, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore was right there. It was a beautiful sight.
The bathroom we had was okay for me, I'm only 5 feet tall; but my husband who is 6 feet tall and 230+ pounds found it way too small. Every morning I could hear him scream "Ow!" because he kept hitting his elbow against the wall in the stand-up shower. He keeps telling everyone that the shower could not have measured more than a 2.5' cube that was 6.5' tall! LOL! The upside of the bathroom was that it was very clean. It had a toilet and bidet and pedestal sink. And the towels were clean and over-sized (I mean over-sized that they looked almost like beach towels...funny).
Breakfast was included in our stay. I don't know if it's standard since I booked our whole vacation through EuropeanDestinations.com. Canned pates (I just remember the liverwurst), rolls, croissants (plain and jelly filled), cookies, juice (orange and blood orange), cheese, yogurt and cold cuts (small packages of mortadella and salami) were offered everyday from 7:30-10:30 am. There was coffee available such as regular, expresso, and cappuccino. They had it on a menu on the wall with prices next to each, but like I said, that was included in our vacation deal so I'm not sure who paid or not.
The only negatives were the elevator and internet. The elevator was TINY as stated in other reviews. It barely fit my husband and I and our 2 regular sized luggages (29" rolling duffles). There is no internet at the hotel, I felt so detached from the rest of the world not being able to get online at all while I was in the room. One more thing, not really a negative, but it was strange- you have to leave your room key when you leave the hotel. Really weird, but that was their rule. Fortunately, none of our belongings were taken nor did we find unwelcomed visitors in our room.
The location of the hotel is okay. It wasn't so close to the sketchy area of the Termini station, but it wasn't that far either. It was our first time in Rome, so we weren't really sure what was a "good" area or a "bad" area. So we just pretended like we were home in NYC and just watched our surroundings... 'cause you never know! All the sites seemed like they were in walking distance from the Amalfi. We walked to everything in Rome: the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, even to the Vatican. Great exercise after all the pasta!
