We stayed at the Aldrovandi Palace for a weekend in November (so the pool was not a major attraction then) and were disappointed. Although the hotel had allegedly been refurbished recently, it did not show (at least inside). The hotel lobby is unimpressive and our room was fairly small and worn down. Despite being on the fifth floor (the hotel's highest), you could hear significant street noise. The hotel service was very uneven: while some people were helpful and friendly, others were not (although we had requested newspaper delivery when we checked in, the newspaper never came). Another downside is the location. Unlike what the hotel's website makes you believe ("just steps from the Spanish Steps"), it is an approximately 30 minute walk to the Spanish Steps and even further to other sites. Also, don't walk to or from the city at night!! The Villa Borghese gardens near the hotel are a hangout for gay prostitutes and another couple was attacked in the park on their way back to the hotel (the concierge, whom they had asked to call the police, was very unhelpful and quite rude). So, while the city is beautiful and interesting, we would not recommend the Aldrovandi Palace. In fact I wonder how the hotel ever got accepted by the "Leading Hotels of the World" organization; the Aldrovandi certainly does not seem to meet their typical standards.

Management response from Annamaria Calise, General Manager
(Management representative)

Dear Sir/Madam

I have carefully read your review and please let me express my deepest regret for your negative feelings about our hotel.

I am writing you here because we deeply care about our hotel and its clients. As General Manager here at the Aldrovandi Palace since 15 years, I am always terribly sorry when
a client did not like our services having the impression this is not a first class hotel.

I am personally acting along with our Executive Manager and please be assured that every effort is
now being made on our part so as to be certain that a complaint of its kind is avoided in the future.

We have recently conducted and concluded a refurbishing program of the majority of rooms in
order to improve our hotel and its image, both as one of the premier 5 star luxury hotels in Rome
and as a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. New rooms have been technologically
upgraded to feature new amenities like interactive TV and personal portals for high speed wireless internet connections. Other work concluded are the installation of a high-grade security system, new guest elevators, new service elevators, and refurbishment of the outdoor façade.

We are also investigating the issue of the attack by prostitutes to the other clients. I am working with local authorities to prevent it to happen in the future.

Best Regards,

Annamaria Calise
General Manager

Went there for Wife’s 30th Birthday, we both had a wonderful time. Very friendly and helpful, lovely Hotel. But expensive. Hope you enjoy walking as Rome is very hilly, but there is a complementary Shuttle service run by the Hotel to the Spanish steps which was also very helpful.

This hotel was the most expensive one we stayed in on our visit to Italy, and unfortunately we didn't get what we paid for.

I think the hotel description is misleading as to where it is located - we had stayed at the Duke hotel a couple of minutes away from here a few nights previously and had no problem with the location, because we knew about it before we arrived. We also didn't pay a city centre premium when we stayed at the Duke like we did here.

The staff were plain obnoxious, the worst customer service in our whole trip. No matter what else is wrong with a hotel you will usually forgive it, at least to an extent, if the customer service is good and the staff friendly and helpful.

Our room was outdated with one entire wall mirrored, and decorated in an interesting aqua colour. Our room was at the front, but we were lucky enough to be on the 5th flor so although we could hear the trams they weren't a huge problem. The location of the air conditioning unit was really stupid - in the window recess behind the curtains, so the choice is light streaming in at 6am, or being roasting hot... There was a safe, a well stocked mini bar (although at 8 euros for a fanta I would think twice) and a TV with a good selection of channels. The room had an integral door leading to the room next door if a family were staying in it. The bathroom was okay, but no tub, only a very average shower cubicle. And even though the booking was clearly made for 2 people there was only one robe in the bathroom. The marble sink was nice though.

The pool area was very nice, and the only time we saw good service was from the pool attendant. There is a nice bar area out by the pool, but we waited 35 minutes before a waiter took our order (despite asking the waiters who were standing around doing absolutely nothing in the restaurant - clearly it wasn't their job to help customers though), and were seriously considering going somewhere else for a drink by the time he showed up.

I can't tell you anything about the breakfast because it wasn't included in our £183 a night room. This was the only time it wasn't included in our whole stay.

If you head left out the hotel then head straight up for about ten minutes you come to a really nice area with lots of restaurants and lovely shops. We had dinner in a good restaurant up there where the service was second to none (they wouldn't have had to try that hard to impress me after the hotel, but they were very good anyway!).

In summary, I would save a bit of cash and stay round the corner at the Duke Hotel, or else if you still want to splash the cash pay for the location and stay right in the middle of the action.

The hotel has a great swimming pool and pool service although it's very shady early morning/late PM.

Breakfast is very expensive, take care not to choose from the buffet unless you want to pay 30 euros per person each morning. The waiters will over charge you for choosing from the breakfast menu, you are paying for their service.

Rooms are average, I would have expected better from this hotel. They are in need of modernisation!

The 'baby' restaurant looks great but very very expensive, somewhere you go for a real treat. There's no other dinner facilities in the hotel apart from room service.

Location wise, it's a bit far from the centre, taxis are required for every trip and you can be charged between 7 and 25 euros depending on the taxi driver. The hotel is opposite the zoo in Rome, if you are interested in seeing the animals. Although the tiger looks very sorrowful in a very small enclosure!

We had a wonderful stay at the Aldrovandi. The staff was very attentive, the room was beautiful. It has a gorgeous pool, which as I understand is not
common in Rome. I would highly recommend it.
