May 15, 2009 | Trip type: Friends getaway

I stayed in this hotel with three other friends for three nights. When I checked out after the first night (to take a two-day side-trip), I asked the staff to keep our suitcases in the hotel and was refused. The staff claimed that it was hotel policy and said I could send my suitcases to some storage companies for six euros each per day. As we couldn't possibly tug the suitcases for the side-trip, we asked the staff to cancel our subsequent reservation for two nights. The staff, apparently worried about losing our business, talked to the manager on the phone and finally agreed to keep our suitcases on an exceptional basis at no charge. The whole exchange was very unpleasant and the so-called policy was quite absurd. A few days earlier, we did the exact same thing in another hotel in Florence (Hotel Continentale which by the way is excellent in terms of the rooms, service and location) and there was no hesitation at all from that hotel in acceding to our request.

The concierge service of this hotel is also less than satisfactory. We asked them to help us book tickets for the Colleseo and again they refused to do it. Instead the hotel asked us to book local tours (which would charge us much more). I fail to see any valid reason for their refusal to do something which would have incurred no cost to them.

Lastly, I do not know if it is just this hotel or all 'old' hotels in general. The bathroom (of all the rooms we stayed at) are quite smelly.

We stayed at the hotel for three nights as part of the Volvo Overseas Delivery program April 29-May 1, 2009. The location was great and the staff very friendly. The breakfast buffet was also good but there was no variation of the items offered while we were there, still no problem there. The matress however, was an issue. I've traveled around the world for work and pleasure. My wife is a General Manager of a hotel in Dallas, TX and has worked in the hotel industry for over 20 years. We've never seen harder beds and this was a comment we had heard from other guest. On the plus side, I got used to it. I could have used a different pillow and if I traveled with my own I would have been happy.

A side note, the street behind the hotel (Via Lombardie I think) had a really nice little cafe with good food and great prices vs. the rest of Via Veneto. We ate several times and kept running into the same travelers there who obviously enjoyed it too.

The hotel is located on the corner of Via Vento and Via Ludovisi adjacent to the American Embassy and literally a couple of minutes walk from the Barberinin Metro (underground). The hotel staff were excellent (ignore any grumbling people on here) There is a lovely lady who was on reception (I cannot rememebr her name, but she is dark skinned and called something like Gerda or Gedra oe Gega (sorry I forgot your name, but she is extrememly helpful and informative (thanks you for all your help and assistance), The staff were so good to notice that it was my partners birthday while we were there (we never mentioned anything to them) and they surprised us with a lovely bottle of well presented champaign while we were out - it was so nice to come ot the room and find it laid out (thank you).
I can hardly fault the hotel, excep tot say the lack of airconditioning meant that it sometimes got noisey at night - if you left the windows open. Breakfast was included and there was the regular contiental and english breakfasts.
Hotel is within easy walking distance of the Spanish Steps and Trevi fountain (10 minutes) and also close to Harrys Bar.
Had one of the best ice-creams ever, just up the road at the ritz cafe (3 euros, but lots of icecream - very good value for money in comparison to other areas.

We really enjoyed our stay in the Savoy. It's in a great location. The room was clean & spacious & quiet too. The beds were big. The breakfast was great in the morning, lots of choice. One of the nicer European hotels we've stayed in.

I would recommend The Savoy hotel if you are visiting Rome. It is an excellent location just off Via Veneto and about a 10 minute walk to the Spanish Steps. The Rome City Tour buses stop just outside the hotel, which is so handy if you intend doing a bus tour when you are there. The bedrooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, bathroom is very nice and the shower was great! Breakfast is very good, great variety. Hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant. We just had one drink up on the terrace bar ( €7 for glass of wine). There are lots of cafes/bars and great places to eat near by. We got a very good deal for b and b as we were staying there in March. Overall, a perfect hotel for a city break in the beautiful city of Rome!
