I agree 100% with everything the last reviewer ..... "Did we go to the same hotel".... states.
We arrived late at night at the hotel and the surrounding area is very intimidating and dirty. Graffiti on walls, shop fronts and even on a parked vans and men standing at street corners , shop doorways watching your every move. Have a look on Google street map for evidence of the local surroundings!. When we got up the next day we were surprised to see the local police parked outside the hotel in 2 vehicles in what we later found out to be their regular parking slot..This was not a one off event and no prior explanation was given by the hotel management. Why park there ever working day if there are no issues?
The hotel is fine and the daily maid service is first class. Our bedroom carpet however had seen better days and was dirty. To conclude - we were very disappointed with the hotels down market location and we would not recommend it to anyone.. Definitely not an area of Rome to take a leisurely walk in the late evening ! Nice hotel in the wrong location.A poor choice of development by the hotel chain.

After reading some of the reviews, I wonder if we went to the same hotel. The area is intimidating to say the least, no matter what race, color or ethnicity they are. We are not used to having men stand around drinking beer on the streets and I don't mean in outdoor cafes. Close to the train and bus station, YES and that is great, but.....

THE AREA IS INTIMIDATING and I will not recommend for families with kids. A single business person coming in and going out from either the train or bus station and moving around the city in a cab is OK if you get the right price. Why are there two or three cars full of carabinieris in front of the hotel in the mornings?

The restaurants in the area are tourist traps with mediocre food at best even if one great feature of the hotel is that it is right across the street from the food market which is always quite an experience and you always hope there is a restaurant owned by someone from the market with great food. Not the case.

The hotel is clean, the service is good and it is close to the stations, but if you scare easily and want to be where you can walk around without looking over your shoulder, specially at night, go somewhere else.

Management response from Alina Catrina, Marketing Office
(Management representative)
Oct 20, 2009
Dear Mendi ,

thanks for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us. First and foremost I must say that I appreciate your positive feedback about the cleanness and the service in our hotel; we are very fortunate to have a team that takes customer satisfaction seriously.
I’m sincerely sorry for the bad impression the area surrounding the hotel has left you, and for this reason I would like to better explain the situation. The area is surely a multiethnic zone but it’s far from being dangerous. This may have been true decades ago, however with the redevelopment of the area and with the increased vigilance it has become a safe area and never our customers (from businessmen to families with kids) had any problems for their safety.
Finally I wish to clarify the misunderstandings that the presence of the Carabinieri might have raised to you and perhaps to other clients as well. During the routine controls they are doing at the typical market near the hotel, they often park their cars right in front of the hotel since it is a private area belonging to the hotel where private cars are not allowed to park It is indeed the only empty space where they can stay for a while in the immediate vicinity of the market and , even if we make your same considerations , we cannot refuse as you can imagine. I understand that maybe at a first sight this aspect can lead to negative thoughts about the safety of the area, but I can assure you that these are routine controls that are more than welcomed in all city areas.
Thank you for sharing your experience and we look forward to welcoming you back soon in case you decide to choose us again.

Best regards.

Roberto Cristadoro,
General Manager

When chosing The Golden Tulip Ambra Palace for our 2 weeks in Rome, I had read that it wasn't in the 'nicest' area. Well, I suppose that's true, but it more than surpassed our expectations. It is a lovely hotel: clean, well-staffed, comfortable, safe, quiet, and one block to the Metro. Also, walking distant to Termini Station, which was important as we did several day trips by train. As for the area, it's actually quite good. There is a huge market directly across the street and 2 small parks within a 5 minute walk. the hotel staff could not have been more pleasant or professional, and their English far surpassed my Italian (which is nil, but nonetheless). The rooms are average in size, with a mini-bar and safe, TV, and wonderful air-conditioning which was greatly appreciated at the end of a 15 hour day in 90f weather. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks in Rome and found this hotel to be a very good 'home' location. I would highly recommend it.

Stayed for 5 nights at the Ambra Palace.AS the hotel is near the bus terminal we caught a bus from the aerport which run frequently and it took about 10mins to walk to the hotel from the terminus.Nice clean rooms, with bed linen changed every day although unneccesary.Annoying tiny showers. If you're chubby you might struggle to pick the soap up again if you drop it! Friendly staff.Only average breakfasts in my opinion.
Overall;good but not as good as some of the reviews on here. Some of you are easily pleased.

Near Termini, nice, quiet, very clean.
The breakfast was good.
The staff very helpful - nice people with smiling faces.
Although the surrounding area has a lot of immigrants we never had any trouble even at night.
Near the hotel there is a small restaurant with exceptional indian food - if you like spicy food you have to eat there.
