This is my second visit to Rome which was a surprise trip for my partners fiftieth birthday, this being her first visit. I have used Golden Tulip hotels in other parts of europe for business purposes. They are generally of a good standard and the Ambra Palace is no different. From previous experience there is a good train service from Fumincino airport on the Leonardo Express which runs half hourly direct to Termini station for 11 euros. It is just a five minute walk from the station if you come off the train and take the first set of steps which bring you out of the station earlier than walking the length of the platform which we did on the way out. The hotel itself is clean and smart looking despite being in a bit of a run down area. Do not let the area put you off as it is very convenient for transport links, with Vittorio Emanuele Metro station a couple of minutes walk if you come out of the hotel and turn right and walk along via Ricasoli you come to Vittorio Emanuele Park with the entrance to the Metro. Back to the hotel, the rooms are quite spacious for Rome although the shower cubicle is a little on the small side despite the batroom being a reasonable size. I was fortunate that the room allocated was at the back of the hotel but cannot see it would be a problem at the front as the air conditioning was excellent. Breakfast was more than adequate with cereals, a small selection of hot food (mushrooms, scrambled egg and bacon) and the usual slection of cold meats, cheese and pastries. All in all would recommend this hotel as a good base for exploring Rome as long as you are prepared for a little extra walk or do not mind using the metro system

My wife and I spent 8 days here without any problem or inconvenience. Yes the hotel is 5 minutes walk away from the central (Termini) station and this is really handy because trains, metro and the main buss station are there as well. A train called "Leonardo" takes you from the airport "Fiumicino" (€ 11.00/person) in an half hour right to Termini and you will get off right at the exit to go to your hotel, very handy in deed! Buy a metro ticket for 3 days and you have access to "all" public transportation. In front of the hotel there's an "in building" market, worth visiting. Yes in the hotel neighborhood there are a lot of Asian people, all are in one or the other way related to plenty of Chinese wholesale places in that neighborhood, and NO these neighborhood id not dangerous just because there's Asian people around (you better watch for pick-pockets from other ethnic groups!). Hotel staff was friendly and helpful, breakfast was OK, and as much as you wanted to eat. We experienced no excessive noise in or outside the hotel. Room cleanliness was 100%, only there head pillows are to thin and hard at my opinion, but.... Now last comment about Rome; this city is one large museum, lot to see, lots of walking if you want to see beaucoup. Take the effort and buy a good city tourist guide to not miss worthwhile "must see" spots. A city bus tour (open roof buses) is recommended for the first day, then start your journey on whatever you selected to see. There's plenty of restaurants, pizzerias, trattorias and alike, but believe me 99% of them will screw you one way or the other (laugh). A must is also to visit the most famous gelateria named Giolitti, they sell eventually 500kg of ice cream each day...go for it. Romans are nice people and the majority can express themselves in some English, so no problem on that side either. Enjoy Rome.....

My wife and I spent six nights here and were very pleased. This was our first (and hopefully not last) visit to Rome. A ten minute walk from Termini to the hotel was very handy. We had been told we would get a room on the inner court as we had heard it can get noisy on the street. We arrived early, so we took the first room available - on the street. At times it got a bit noisy, but never all that bad. The rooms are small by US standards, but comfortable. We had a slight problem with breakfast on the first day. It came with our reservation, but the hotel didn't have a record of it. This was quickly cleared up. The breakfast is great and for budget travellers like us, helped us cut down on our food spending. Eggs and bacon - as well as the mushrooms - were greatly appreciated, along with fruit, bread, croissants, and assorted other sweets. After we picked this hotel, we were concerned by some of the reviews about the safety of the neighborhood. It looks a bit rough around the edges, but we never had any problems. I can't understand how anyone would have any concern during the day - unless they just plain did not like seeing a lot of working immigrants. This didn't bother us. At night, it might be intimidating to some people who just aren't used to rough-around-the-edges sections of big cities. We weren't out until the wee hours, but it was fine up until 9:30 or 10:00 at night. Overall we had a really good experience at the Ambra Palace and would recommend it to budget travellers.

Visited this hotel at the end of March 2009 with my partner. The hotel itself is very clean, rooms spacious by European standards & staff very pleasant.
The room (true to European hotels) had a double bed made of two singles and provided tea/coffee making facilities - although more than 2 sachets of UHT milk a day would've been appreciated. The bathroom had a great power shower, plenty of clean towels and complimentary toiletries.
The breakfast buffet had plenty of choice including cereals, pastries, hot food, fruit, juuices and yoghurts, all served in a clean, bright room.
However being so close to Termini station, although great for arrival/departure, made the hotel a questionable choice. The area around Termini feels slightly scary - as if you've taken a wrong turn into a bad neighbourhood. It didn't feel safe at night and there are not too many cafes/restaurants/bars in the area. Although we didn't encounter any problems in the area, if we do ever re-visit Rome, we both agreed that we would prefer to stay elsewhere.

While I will try to be brief, potential guests should know that this hotel is in a sketchy neighborhood and employees are unhelpful and rude. We booked 2 rooms through Hotwire and when we arrived, they told us that we could only have one person per room - otherwise we would need to pay an additional E100. Our hands were tied! (we are in the process of getting the money refunded from Hotwire but it has been a tedious process)

DO NOT let the hotel arrange cabs or tours for you (along with airport transfers) as they take a deep cut - and it is ALWAYS much more expensive than if you did it on your own. We paid E20 for a short cab ride to Trastevere - the cab called/flagged by the hotel - and only E11 to get home. The cab driver went to the front desk and was handed some sort of paper - it was shady and we were ripped off.

Also, don't be fooled by some of the reviews as the hotel staff adds their own.

Stay away - there are so many options when in Rome and this should not even be considered. Feel free to sent me a message if you have any specific questions!
