Arrived early off a Mediterranean Cruise and the room was not ready. The front desk staff was helpful. Upon arrival at our room from a tiny elevator we were disappointed. It certainly did not meet our expectations. The room was very small with very little space for clothes. It was difficult for two people to move around had to climb over the bed and each other. However, our biggest shock was the washroom. The shower was impossible. The smallest I've ever seen. As for the breakfast in the basement very old fashioned dining room we ,after a few bites, chose to pass. We went down the street to a cafe for our morning pastry and cappuccino. I don't know who gave this a four star rating but they need glasses. We also stayed at hotels in Florence, Venice and Milan which were truly four star hotels. It put a damper on our trip to Rome and we couldn't wait to leave.

This hotel uses "Simplenet.it" web booking, which I don't know who the actual culprit here is, but here is what happened:
Booked online September 9, for September 29th , then I found a better hotel, then cancelled reservation using same online system they use on their website on September 10.
Regardless, this hotel charges the total price to my credit card after booking, and did not remove it after cancellation.
After cancelled the reservation (3 Weeks before the reservation) . the full charge was still not removed. When I cancelled the reservation online, it displayed that "reservation was cancelled", yet no cancellation e-mail was ever sent. Now i am in a deadlock with my credit card company and this lousy hotel that is ignoring all of my requests to have these charges reversed. Look elsewhere!

The hotel suited us well. It was convenient for the station and the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain area of Rome. It was comfortable, clean and quiet, despite being full. The breakfast was good. If you want a big bathroom, perhaps it is not for you.

We booked a 4 day break in Rome and kind of just stumbled across the Gambrinus on the web....booked a flight and all of a sudden we were in Rome....
The Gambrinus is Very close to Porta Pia making navigation to and from easy...nothing is more than a 30 min Bus or Metro ride away and some Famous sights (Spanish Steps and Trevi are within walking distance...not close by..but manageable.
The major stuff , like The Colloseum and Vatican are on the other side of Rome but the Metro station is close enough and Buses are plentiful.
Overall we were happy with the Hotel as a base for our trip...but the Breakfast room was busy and choice was limited, unfortunately the coffee machine broke during our stay as well and the Juice machine ran out of Fresh juice...!
Our room was on the corner of the Hotel and was therefore wedge shaped, but the air conditioning just managed to keep the room cool during the Hottest days of this Summer. The Bathroom was snug but adequate, everywhere was clean.
The Staff were pleasant and all the Concierge we met were helpfull and knowledgeable.
I would recommend this Hotel if you are on a budget and are willing and able to walk a fair bit!
