“Excellent ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

This is a must when visiting Rome. We booked through tickitaly and although it seemed organised chaos to start with (there were no clear visible signs at first to see where you had to line up .... it's the 2 arches facing the road). There is now scaffolding in place due to cleaning.

If you book through this operative then you must ensure you are there on time for your tour as they will not wait. We lined up at 11.00 am (tour at 12 noon) and one of the organisers told us to come back at 12, I tried to explain that our tour was at 12 but she was not having any of it. The booking form also advises you to ensure you are there 30 mins before during the week and 60 mins at the weekend Her attitude was terrible (obviously got out of bed the wrong way) so being a woman of substance I took no notice and came back at 11.30 and we were let in to line up to exchange our ticket. If we had not have done this we would have missed the tour as there was a queue to obtain our tickets. The ticket also includes The Forum and Palatine Hill.

We did the upper and lower level tour and it was fantastic ...... when we got home we had to watch Gladiator again to visualise it. !!

Take water and a hat as there is no shade at all and there are also some steps to the lower and upper levels.

“A guided tour is worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

We booked an early morning tour (8.15am), with a small group of max 12 participants guaranteed.
This meant we could move around easily as a small group, could ask questions of Alesio our very knowledgable guide and had time to visit the base and top of the coliseum. These areas are not available to the general public who simply buy entry on the day. Therefore we saw the cells where the gladiators prepared before they entered the arena and also where the animals were kept.
The tour also included the Forum and the Arch of Constantine.
It was good value and well worth the time we invested.

“Waste of money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Our tour guide showed us almost nothing, we took about a 50 metre tour. The tour guides English was so difficult to understand that our family of four had to compare notes to make sense of any of it. We saw a lot more after the tour was over. It's too bad we saw so little and she didn't make this a good experience when it is a very cool place. I would skip this tour but buy the advance online ticket.

I myself am not one for going on guided tours but it is a must , when you vist this site , you will need to go on one that will include the Roman forum as well , because this area is not just the coliseum , or the history of the coliseum , it`s the Musolini museum as well and the site of the begining of Rome . With the right tour you will find out all about the fights and slaughter that took place here and why it was built, and why it is the way it is now , no even for someone as mean as me you will get good value and good historical knowledge and also some very good entertainment , just make sure you have lots of time to spend there as its alot to see .Things you will need are a fully charged camera , if its a hot day make sure you have the sun block , and then include in your supplies some bottled water , the vendors around this site can be very expensive , and maybe even a lite snack as well . You will need to ready for a lot of information overload , but its really worth it .
The Roman soldiers that are to be seen walking around , are a trap for photographers , if you take there picture , they will take your euros off you, if they see you , and they are not cheap , but the main one is be alert ,THERE ARE PICKPOCKETS around here as there are at most tourist traps in Italy , and the street sellers are a pain . But all in all you have to see this beautiful bit of real topdraw history .

“Rome day trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

We stayed in Sorrento and took the local Cicumvesuviana train to Naples for 4 Euro each and then the fast train to Rome (booked fast train in the UK in advance from the Trenitalia website (very easy and cost 140 Euro for family of four return) ) and two and bit hours later we hit the centre of Rome . 15hour day but worth it as journey time saved 4hours of travelling on the local excursion. We met a huge queue at the Colliseum but were approached by representative of local guide run from the tobacconist just outside the metro station . Yes we paid over the odds ( double the price ) but with two kids jumped the queue and had a guided tour for our money . We spent the rest of day walking around Rome taking in other sites.Heartily recommend both the journey and the day in Rome even though it was a long day we had a great time .
