“For lovers of off the beaten track dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

I dined at this place in early Sep 2012, based on a recommendation from a local - and it didn't disappoint! I dined alone and didn't regret it for one second. The incredibly lovely host for the afternoon, Paola, was gracious and hospitable and doesn't get in your way or hover over you waiting for you to finish. Her English was broken but we could understand each other and this made the experience cute and authetic. I started with proscuitto and melon and a glass of crisp pinot grigio. Paola brought out to-die-for crusty bread with olive oil. The penne amatriciana was heavenly and rustic. This is was an authentic italian dining experience. I was there early-mid afternoon and could've stayed there all day. If it's off the beaten track you like then La Tavernaccia is the place for you! Go and find out for yourself and see...

“The Italian Family Restaurant!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

Frequented by locals, this restaurant has a loud cheerful feel, and a real family run restaurant vibe. Had garlic prosciutto for starters and traditional style lasagna. I didnt have the Pizza one of our friends did and they looked amazing. The restaurant was filled inside and out. It does not have a touristy feel to it. Definately reecommend when you visit Rome.

“Great value and authentic feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

I had dinner with a small group just after arriving by air. The starters were great and the pizza was nice.

“Authentic Family Restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

After staying with family in Southern Italy, my husband and I were spending 6 days in Rome. After 5 days of being completely disappointed with the food in Rome, even the "non touristy places", we were recommended to La Tavernaccia by the concierge at our hotel (Hotel Majestic). We were able to get a reservation, and were advised that most of the customers at this restaurant were locals and not tourists. As someone of Italian heritage, I have a lot of respect for family run restaurants, and an authentic feel.

We were greeted upon our arrival, and our waitress (one of the owners) took the time to explain the menu in English to us, prior to ordering. Despite having made reservations earlier that day, the restaurant was crowded, mostly with locals. The pasta and meat dishes were phenomenal. The dishes were not overdone, yet full of flavor and authentic ingredients. After a week of spending $250+ dollars on mediocre food, it was wonderful to find a place that was reasonable, yet top quality.

If we had spent any more time in Rome, we would have absolutely decided to dine at La Tavernaccia again. I really cannot speak highly enough of this establishment. We had such an amazing experience and can't wait to visit on our next trip back to Rome.

“Authentic Neighborhood Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Recommended by another restaurant that was closing for their August break, we went to La Tavernaccia two evenings and enjoyed the ambiance of a typical Roman neighborhood restaurant that was filled, inside and out, with tables full of local families and friends. It gets busy here and reservations are recommended and we were glad we made them as we saw the place fill up. As other reviewers stated, the menu is handwritten in Italian and one of staff can translate it for you if need be. The decor isn't fancy and that made it more authentic to us as this is a place to sit and take your time and enjoy your evening. The food is typical Roman fare and is pretty good with excellent grilled veggies and platters of other daily made dishes on display. I wouldn't say it's exceptional, but it's pretty solid. The service is efficient and friendly and they try their best to please (There was one waitress there who didn't crack a smile and we had bets at the table who could get a smile from her. Happily, there was success before the end of the evening). This is a family run establishment that has been operating over 60 years and has the feel of a classic, neighborhood Roman restaurant. Recommended.
