“Fabulous apartment within a stone's throw of all the sights!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012 for a stay in April 2012

We've just returned from 4 nights in this fantastic apartment. The furnishings are simple but tasteful - and a clever mix of old and new. It is well equipped (LOVE the waffle towels!) and, much to our boys' delight, there was free internet. 1 ask would be for a kettle (for us tea-loving English) though we got by fine with a saucepan on the gas. Also the dining chairs were a little wobbly. There's a microwave and full oven, dishwasher, etc. The beds are firmer than we're used to, but we had no problem sleeping. The apartment is 4 flights up so, although you can hear the buzz of the Campo di Fiori below, it doesn't disturb you. (The stairs can be hard work if you're not used to them but I'm sure it did my cellulite some good.) The top bedroom is accessed via a wonderful stone staircase (which is fully open on one side and so might not be suitable for young children). It's up the stairs and along the landing, then through a curtain and down a step into the room (no door). Also at the top of these stairs is the apartment's highlight - a roof terrace with a view across Rome towards St Peters. The 2 sunny days we had meant we could lounge on this sun-trap, at some point, and soak up the (upper) atmosphere of this wonderful old city. The balcony with herbs for picking on the floor below is rather lovely too! The indoor living space (sofa, kitchen, dining table) is just one open area and isn't huge but the little time spent indoors saw the boys on ipads on their beds anyway so it didn't matter.
There are some great little guide books, as well as novels in different languages, provided. The TV didn't have many channels (all in Italian) and the boys resorted at one point to watching Jersey Shore with sub-titles! By the way, for your information, the TV is in the upstairs bedroom and a DVD player is also provided. We didn't realise this and would have taken some DVDs with us for possible rainy nights.
We were a little apprehensive about the location when we googled it in street view, as you can't see down the street (vicolo) and there seemed to be tons of graffiti everywhere - making it seem a bit seedy. Also, the instructions to pay cash on arrival seemed a little odd and worrying. However, the owners were so friendly and helpful via email and although we got there an hour early, we were let in by the cleaner. Our payment was made and our minds were totally put at rest - we felt completely safe the whole time - the area is home to some great little shops and restaurants and quite buzzy with tourists, etc as it's on the doorstep of Campo di Fiori. There's also a great little provisions shop on the corner of Campo di Fiori which looks expensive and touristy but isn't! Really useful for milk and fresh bread (kept behind the deli counter) and reasonably priced wine!!
There's no Metro close by but the apartment is within walking distance of all the sites you'd want to see. The Piazza Navona is really nearby and at various times we walked from the apartment to the Spanish Steps, to Vatican City, to Roman Forum and Colosseum and to the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain and it was fine (even with my arthritic hip). However, do take a really good map as the piazzas and intricate web of vicolos can be really confusing. You also need comfortable shoes as the streets are really cobbledy. Just a little tip on the whole sight-seeing thing: Best thing we did was to pay more and book our Sistine Chapel tickets online before we went to Rome as we were able to walk straight past the MASSIVE queues. For the Colosseum, buy your ticket at the Roman Forum where the queues are shorter - it's a combined ticket (and take ID for the discounts they offer to EU youths/kids are free).
To sum up, even though we had a couple of really rainy days, the stay was wonderful. Comfortable, unique apartment in a great location! PS Time scale for return of security deposit isn't up yet so couldn't rate that section below.
