“Back to the past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

This was one the best experience in Rome. The Catacombe di San Sebastiano is the most interesting between the other two. You can go riding a taxi (it's easy get taxis to go back), or take a excursion from your Hotel. The ride into the Tombs take one hour. They have guides Spoken in English or Italian. Be sure to take the right one. The San Sebastian's history is very interesting. He is "Patrono" of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. You can miss this.

“Moving spiritual experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

As a Christian, this was one of the high points of our trip to Rome. It was amazing to hear the stories of early Christians and martyrs, and to walk through the tombs. Plus, it was cool underground in a hot August!

“Cool and deep”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

The catacombs provided a glimpse of early Christian life in Rome. Seeing ancient wall paintings so well preserved was impressive. The only disappointment was that the tour was so short, and so little of the total complex could be viewed. If an extended tour was available, I would have taken it.

“Catacombe di San Sebastiano is neat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

Costs 8 euros per person & is NOT for chlasterphobics. The cost includes a guided tour by an employee of the place. It's cash only. In order to get to Appia Antica, take a city bus & it's a short walk from the bus stop. It's nice to get out of the city for a bit & Appia Antica is a beautiful, serence place. There is also a place to fill up your water bottle with fresh, cold water half way in between the bus stop & catacombe. There is also a little cafe on the corner where the bus drops you off in case you are hungry or thirsty.

“piece of the Roma puzzle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

When visiting Rome with it's enormous history, there are some obvious pieces of the puzzle, like the Vatican or the Forum Romanum and the Colloseum. The Basilica di San Clemente and a visit to catacombs are less obvious but highly interesting pieces of the puzzle, linking many of the other pieces.
The San Clemente is easy to insert into your programm (being close to the colloseum). The catacombs aren't. Other reviewers already mentioned: you need to take a bus on the via Appia which on that part is one way. So only when you leave the catacombs, you realise you've got no idea how to get back... Yet it's hightly worthwile the effort. Also since you have to follow a guided visit: the guide (at least: our guide) threw some interesting shades of grey on the classical black-and-white story of christians being persecuted by the Romans.
