Recently returned from Italy, spend first 3 days in Rome at the Dei Mellini. Hotel was lovely, we got there several hours before check in but the front desk clerk promised to get us into a room within 30 minutes and he did. Room was surprisingly large with a very nice bathroom and was very comfortable. Location is on the Vatican side of the river, so a little bit out of the way, but my husband and I were still able to walk to wherever we wanted to go and we didnt find it an inconvenience. Definitely get tickets in advance to for the sights you want to see, the lines for the Vatican must have taken half the day to get in and we just skipped the line entirely. well worth it. overall, I would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed in the Hotel Dei mellini for 3 nights in September 2009. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room very clean, housekeeping first class. We travelled to Rome for a 50th birthday celebration and to our surprise and delight on returning to our hotel found a unprompted complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and a birthday card. This was a very wonderful gesture. Location was very convenient for restaurants, shops, and sights without having to be in center. Area was quiet and safe with a fair selection of bars and restaurants within comfortable walking distance. Would return to this hotel should the opportunity present.

Had booked a suite. It was spacious but dark and the furniture basic. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were crisp and nice. The wallpaper needed some attention in the bedroom. There was a bottle of sparkling wine and two glasses on arrival although the room was booked for one. The following day a second bottle with two glasses were delivered although the first one had not been touched. It was accompanied by a birthday card from the management. This was not appreciated having left home at that particular date to avoid any celebration or mention of my birthday.
The reception staff was not helpful in booking a city tour but handed a leaflet instead not providing any options or information. No information was given about breakfast upon checking in. No thank you or good bye or any greetings were given upon checking out.
The breakfast was very basic.
The room and the hotel were very clean although the mirror in the lift was in need of a clean.
The location was convenient for the Vatican and for the centre.
It was rather expensive at £255 a night for one person.

We just finished a stay at this hotel in mid-August. Be aware that, at this time of the year, Rome shuts down. The hotel is not in a particularly touristy area, so your options for restaurants will be limited and your options for services like groceries, laundry, etc will be virtually nonexistent. In the August heat, it felt like quite a hike to even the closest Metro stop (15-20 minutes), through meandering, empty streets. Of course, many more services may be available at other times of the year. On the other hand, the streets did feel safe, and the front desk did their best to make recommendations regarding open restaurants, even confirming what was/wasn't open.
Close to the Vatican but far from major archeological sites.
Hotel rooms were nice and reasonably large for Europe. The front desk staff were responsive to our many requests -- no complaints with them at all. Be aware that a half-hour internet connection is 5 Euros, which I find pretty outrageous for a hotel of this class. Breakfast was uneven -- the first day, we had a lovely fresh fruit salad to accompany standard cereals and breads and sweets. Subsequent days, we had to put up with canned fruits.
So, a good but not exceptional experience.
